Boxing Insider Fight Night 4: “Broadway Boxing”

Thursday, April 27, 2023 | Sony Hall, New York, NY
Broadcast: DAZN (live) / SNY (delayed)
Promoter: Larry Goldberg, Boxing Insider Promotions

Boxing Insider Promotions brought the “Broadway Boxing” brand to DAZN for the first time with a stacked six-fight card at Sony Hall. The evening marked the platform debut of several international fighters — including a two-time Mongolian Olympian, a former Japanese world champion making her U.S. debut, and an Irish fan favorite — all under the bright lights of Times Square.

MAIN EVENT
Brian Ceballo (14-1, 7 KOs) def. Luis Alberto “Lucho” Veron (20-7-2, 9 KOs)
Super Welterweight — 8 Rounds
Result: Unanimous Decision (80-72, 79-73, 79-73)
Weights: Ceballo 152½ — Veron 153½

Brooklyn’s Brian Ceballo headlined for the first time and made it count. The junior middleweight prospect dictated the action from the opening bell, using his sharp left hand to keep the experienced Argentine at distance. Veron — who had shared the ring with welterweight contender Alexis Rocha and Shohjahon Ergashev — was game early but his offense diminished round by round as Ceballo’s punches took their toll. By the sixth and seventh rounds, Veron was in pure survival mode. Ceballo trapped him against the ropes in the seventh and unloaded a sustained barrage, but Veron showed toughness to survive to the final bell. “I thought I could have done just a little bit more,” Ceballo said afterward. “But I’m overall happy with tonight.”

CO-FEATURE
Miyo “Miyo Musashi” Yoshida (16-3) def. Indeya “Azucar” Smith (6-7-2, 1 KO)
Super Flyweight — 8 Rounds, 2-Minute Rounds
Result: Majority Decision (78-74, 77-75, 76-76)

In a landmark moment for the card, former two-time WBO super flyweight world champion Miyo Yoshida made her U.S. debut. The 35-year-old Japanese fighter, who had relocated to Brooklyn and was training out of Gleason’s Gym, faced a familiar Boxing Insider opponent in Indeya Smith, fresh off her upset of Sulem Urbina in December. Smith came out firing her jab and was competitive throughout, but Yoshida’s size and strength allowed her to press the action over the middle rounds. Smith rallied in the seventh with sustained offense, but Yoshida landed the cleaner punches down the stretch. One judge had it even at 76-76, but the other two gave it to Yoshida. She would go on to upset Ebanie Bridges for the IBF bantamweight title eight months later.

Tsendbaatar “Chinggis Khaan” Erdenebat (6-0, 3 KOs) def. Edy Valencia Mercado (20-10-6, 7 KOs)
Super Featherweight — 8 Rounds (NABF Junior Super Featherweight Title)
Result: Unanimous Decision (80-72, 78-74, 78-74)

The two-time Mongolian Olympian returned to Sony Hall two months after demolishing Giovanni Gutierrez in three rounds and turned in a more methodical performance against the durable Mexican veteran. Erdenebat boxed effectively behind his jab, though Valencia — a Mexican featherweight titlist who had gone the distance with former world champion Jessie Magdaleno — connected in the pocket at times. Erdenebat captured the vacant NABF junior super featherweight title. He had made headlines earlier in the week after admitting to being one of Ryan Garcia’s sparring partners ahead of the Gervonta Davis fight, claiming he hurt Garcia with a body shot in camp.

Larry “Lethal” Fryers (12-6-1, 5 KOs) def. Joshua David “Pretty Boy” Rivera (8-3, 3 KOs)
Junior Welterweight — 6 Rounds
Result: TKO Round 6 (0:01)

Ireland’s Larry Fryers, fighting out of upstate Westerlo, New York, snapped a six-bout winless streak in emphatic fashion — stopping Rivera at just one second into the sixth and final round. Fryers improved to 12-6-1 and called out Dublin’s undefeated Pierce O’Leary after the win.

Sydney “The Jackal” Maccow (9-8-1 NC, 3 KOs) def. Christian Otero (5-4, 2 KOs)
Lightweight — 6 Rounds
Result: Unanimous Decision (59-55, 58-56, 58-56)

Brooklyn’s Maccow, originally from Sint Maarten, outpointed local rival Otero in a competitive lightweight bout between two NYC-area fighters.

David Lopez (3-0, 2 KOs) def. Nelson Morales (3-6)
Result: Unanimous Decision (4 Rounds)

The 19-year-old Las Vegas prospect Lopez opened the card with a four-round decision over Scranton’s Morales.
