It wasn’t the fight that Jermall Charlo, nor his fans for that matter, wanted but the current WBC middleweight titlist has his next opponent.

The truculent knockout artist will attempt to dazzle his hometown Houston crowd on June 18th, when he takes on fringe contender Maciej Sulecki. Initially, Charlo had been hoping to lure current pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez into the ring. However, once the Mexican native revealed that he would instead challenge WBA light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol, followed by a third showdown against hated rival Gennadiy Golovkin, Charlo looked elsewhere.

Immediately, representatives of Charlo sent a lucrative offer in the direction of highly ranked contender and former junior middleweight titlist, Jaime Munguia. Ultimately, although both fighters agreed to face one another next, network disagreements pushed their showdown to the wayside. Now, the 31-year-old will attempt to defend his middleweight throne against a lesser-known target.

In the case of Sulecki, while he’s proven to be respectable, he’s come up short on the grandest of stages. In his lone crack at a world title against Demetrius Andrade in 2019, Sulecki was thoroughly outboxed and simply overmatched, losing every single round on all three judges’ scorecards. He has, however, reeled off two consecutive victories against two unknown entities in Sasha Yengoyan and Fouad El Massoudi.

With Charlo unable to land marquee showdowns at 160 pounds, the middleweight titlist will place his sole focus on Sulecki. While he’s wildly viewed as one of the premier 160 pounders in the world, his ring appearances have come few and far between as of late.

Over the past two years, Charlo has fought just once annually. Most recently, he scored a fairly wide unanimous decision victory over Juan Macias Montiel, almost a full year from his upcoming contest against Sulecki.

With just a few weeks left until their showdown, former Jr middleweight titlist, Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs), will be forced to look for a new dance partner once again.

On June 19th, Munguia was originally scheduled to take on highly rated contender, Maciej Sulecki. Yet, according to his promoter, Andrzej Wasilewski, his fighter has decided to remove himself from their showdown for undisclosed reasons. Frustrations for Munguia are beginning to spill over as this is now the second time that Sulecki has pulled out of their fight.

Sulecki, 32, was viewed as the perfect opponent to raise the profile of Munguia. The long-time contender has only suffered defeats against former IBF middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs and current WBO belt holder, Demetrius Andrade.

In addition to Sulecki (29-2, 11 KOs) being a well-respected veteran that would bolster the resume of Munguia, the 24-year-old, appeared to be gearing up for a possible showdown against future Hall of Famer and current IBF champion, Gennadiy Golovkin. Munguia acknowledged that a matchup between them was in the early discussion stages several months ago and that Golovkin was the desired opponent for a date later on this year.

For now though, Munguia will continue to bide his time on the sidelines as his team works on a new possible opponent with likely, a new date. The Mexican native is still looking to return to the ring since his sixth-round stoppage win over Tureano Johnson in October of 2020.

“Fighting at home,” says WBO world middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade, “is really exciting.” Andrade, a native of Rhode Island, will be having a homecoming fight this weekend, when he faces Maciej Sulecki at Providence’s Dunkin Donuts Center on Saturday night. “In a way it’s more exciting for the fans in Providence,” says Andrade, “as I’ve fought all over the world already. So, to give my hometown the chance to watch me display my skills, talent, work ethic is going to be great for them – they’re going to see greatness from one of their own. I’ve got two full passports from travelling the world and it’s a privilege to do that, to see the world and learn and gain experience, so to come home for such a big fight is great.”

At 20-0, Andrade is regarded as one of the most skilled, if not the single most skilled, fighter in the very competitive middleweight division. The fact that the undefeated 31-year-old fights on DAZN, the same streaming service that broadcasts the fights of Canelo Alvarez, Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, and others, indicates that the future can be quite bright and lucrative indeed – provided, of course, that he get past the 28-1 Sulecki.

“I’m an Olympian and a two-weight World champion,” says Andrade, “but that’s not enough because there’s a lot of people that haven’t seen my talent displayed in the mainstream like some other fighters, like Canelo Alvarez, as Golden Boy did a great job moving him and GGG had great promotion too, but they’re not the greatest talents out there, they are just the most popular. It’s called prize fighting and I am looking to capitalize on that, with the capital.” Although his career has seen its share of quiet years (he only fought once a year between 2013 and 2017), Andrade is eager to now make is presence felt.

“I’ve got air in me now,” he says. “Should I have been the guy like Canelo with the machine behind him? Yeah, I could’ve been that, but it didn’t fall that way for me, but now I’m here. I kept my focus in mind, body and soul and continued to grind, because anyone else, this boxing game is hard and people give up, especially when there’s no money coming in as you have to pay the bills.”

“I’ve been through the politics of boxing and found my way out of it,” he continues, “just like I’ve found my way to win in every fight. Being who I am and having the team around me has got me to the point where I’m headlining the Dunk as an undefeated World champion.

Eddie Hearn promoted Daniel Jacobs at the Barclays Center in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York tonight on the HBO network.

Three major fight cards were shown on US Television tonight, with the HBO show being broadcast last.

Attendance looked sparse at the beginning of the telecast as Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller (20-0-1) took in Johan Duhaupas (37-4) in a WBA Heavyweight Title Eliminator.

Miller weighed in at 304 pounds and was able to easily walk Duhaupas down in the opening rounds. He connected with two good overhand rights in the first that forced Duhaupas to cover up.
Miller continued to walk Duhaupas down in the second round and was able to land some heavy uppercuts on Duhaupas by the ropes. Miller was warned to keep his punches up when he landed a shot below the belt in the second round.

Duhaupas was able to land some short combinations in the middle of the ring in the third round but Miller took those shots well and landed several good short shots.

Miller had Duhaupas stunned in the fifth round when he momentarily switched to a southpaw stance. Miller’s controlled the pace and distance in the sixth and seventh rounds, but Duhaupas was able to show enough offense in the eighth round to maybe steal it form Miller.

Miller looked like he was slowing down a little bit in the ninth and tenth rounds but tagged Duhaupas several times in the eleventh round and looked close to knocking him down.

Duhaupas was a little hesitant to come out for the final round but did so at his corner’s urging. He was far too behind to win by decision in the final round and looked like he was trying to survive rather than trying to win as the fight came to an end.

Jarrell Miller wins by unanimous decision with scores of 119-109, 119-109, and 117-111.

The main event of the night was between Daniel Jacobs (33-2) and Maciej Sulecki (26-0) in a WBA Middleweight Eliminator.

The crowd was very vocal throughout this fight and Jacobs looked like the bigger fighter in the ring as Sulecki has spent a lot of his career fighting in the junior middleweight division.
Sulecki showed good upper body movement early on and was able to land a solid straight right hand on Jacobs when he switched to a southpaw stance in the second round.

Jacobs connected with a good hook/uppercut combination in the third round and was getting his timing down better. His shoulder roll defense was working for him and Jacobs ended the third round strong.

Jacobs landed a strong left hook at the end of the fourth round and his cross arm defense was giving Sulecki fits in the fifth round.

Sulecki however remained slick throughout and may have stolen the seventh or eighth rounds, but he wasn’t throwing combinations and seemed ok with landing one to two punches at a time while Jacobs was more likely to throw combinations.

Jacobs hand speed was more apparent in the later rounds though he was getting hit by Sulecki. Jacobs focused more on the body in the tenth and eleventh rounds.

There were a lot of swing rounds in the middle rounds, but Jacobs saved his best round for last when he connected with a combination ending right hand that sent Sulecki to the mat. Sulecki was able to beat the count and end the fight swinging, but Jacobs appeared to have done enough to win the fight.

The judges scored it 116-111, 117-110 and 115-112 for Daniel Jacobs.
