David Price Training With David Haye for Klitschko fight

Posted on 06/06/2011

DAVID PRICE has been employed last week as a Wladimir Klitschko clone by WBA heavyweight champion David Haye.

The 6ft 8in Olympic bronze medallist sparred with the Haye on Monday and Wednesday night in behind closed doors training sessions.

Haye called up Price the replicate Klitschko ahead of his big unification fight against Klitschko.

Price (10-0) also benefitted as he winds down training before his hometown British heavyweight title eliminator against John McDermott at Liverpool Olympia on Saturday June 11.

Price’s promoter Frank Maloney said: “Sparring between two top class heavyweight is something you don’t see so you can imagine how good this was.

“Good luck to David Haye against Klitschko, but all I really wanted to watch in the spar was the progress David has made.”

Price is often called in by world heavyweight title challengers who are preparing to fight the IBF and WBO champion Wladimir or his older brother, WBC title holder Vitali.

Maloney added: “The two sessions left me in no doubt that David is the future of the division and he is Britain’s answer to Klitschko.

“I am no fool though. If David is going to achieve what I believe he can then he must beat John McDermott.

“John is looking well and his new trainer Jason Rowland is doing a top job. He is in the last chance saloon as a big time boxer and that makes him a big threat.

Also on the Liverpool bill, British flyweight champion Paul Edwards (8-0) makes his first title defence against Commonwealth king Chris Edwards (15-14-3)

Other fighters on the talent stacked card include Derry Mathews (27-5) who boxes George Watson (8-4-2), Karl Place (13-0) who comes up against Chad Gaynor (5-0), Rick Godding (13-0), John Quigley (2-0), Liam Vaughan (2-0), Ryan Farrag (3-0) and Anthony Smith.

The show will be televised live by Sky Sports.
