Boxinginsider Notebook: Snooki, Viloria, Pierson, Freitas, Berto/Ortiz, more

The following is the boxinginsider notebook for the week of May 7th to May 14th, covering the comings and goings in the sport of boxing.

Snooki Promotions Results: Hyland Remains Undefeated

Undefeated super featherweight Patrick Hyland needs to be taken seriously despite the fact that he is promoted by Snooki. He improved his record to 26-0 by registering a 4th round knockout over Frankie Archuleta 927-10-1) at the Mid Hudson Civic Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. Josh Williams (6-4) upset previously undefeated Bryant Pappas (13-1-1) with a six round decision.

Jorge “Machito” Maysonet Scores 1st Round TKO

Jorge “Machito” Maysonet (7-0) kept his undefeated record in tact with a 1st round TKO over Gabriel Diaz (5-7). Diaz was dropped three times in the first round, and the referee stopped the fight at the 1:26 mark. Samuel “Sammito” Santana (5-6) upset Joshua “el macho” Santiago (7-1) by split decision. The official scores were 57-56 twice for Santana, and 57-56 for Santiago.

Viloria Stops Nino, Mayol Defeats Miranda

Brian Viloria improved his record to 32-3 with a 9th round TKO over Omar Nino (31-5-2) to retain his flyweight title. This was the third fight between Nino and Viloria, with Nino having won their first matchup and testing positive for a banned substance in their second fight. The fight was called off at 2:07 of the 9th round. On the same card, Rodel Mayol (31-5-2) defeated Julio Cesar Miranda (37-7-1) in the junior bantamweight division with scores of 100-87, 99-90, and 97-91.

ShoBox Results: Nelson Upsets Jhonson, Jack Beats Brand

Showtime televised a card from Las Vegas on Friday, and featured an upset by Willie Nelson (18-1-1) over Yudel Jhonson (12-1) in the super middleweight division. Jhonson, a former Silver Medalist in the 200 Olympics, was favored in the fight, and even dropped Nelson in the fourth round. Nelson was able to secure the victory with scores of 97-92, 97-92, and 95-94. Badou Jack (11-0) defeated Alexander Brand (17-1) in the Super Middleweight division by scores of 77-75, 77-75, and 77-75 for Brand.

Vincente Escobedo Defeats Juan Ruiz

Vencente Escobeda (26-3) easily defeated Juan Ruiz (23-10) in the junior lightweight division. He won with scores of 100-90, 100-90, and 99-91. Ruiz can hardly be considered credible opposition for Esobedo, as he now has a record of 1-8 in his last nine fights.

Golovkin Retains Middleweight Title

Gennady Golovkin improved to (23-0) with a third round TKO over Makoto Fuchigami (19-7). Golovkin fought in the Ukraine and easily defeated Fuchigami, who was taking a giant step up in competition. Golovkin is the WBA Regular Middleweight Champion, and is now considered the mandatory challenger for the other WBA Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm. Zaurbek Baysangurov (27-1) also retained his junior middleweight title with a decision victory over Michel Soro (18-1). Baysangurov won with scores of 117-111, 116-111, and 115-112.

Saunders Set to Make First Title Defense at York Hall

Billy Joe Saunders will be making his first defense of the Commonwealth Middleweight title against Bradley Bryce at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, on June 1st. Saunders is a young prospect to watch as he is only 22, and Pryce is a former commonwealth champion at the light middleweight division. Tickets can be bought at www.frankwarren.tv.

Richard Pierson Set to Fight for WBC Fecarbox Super Middleweight Title

Richard Pierson will be boxing Gary Jones for the WBC Fecarbox Title on Wednesday, June 13th at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ. Pierson is 11-2, and is coming off a fourth round stoppage over Charles Hayward at the Robert Treat Hotel. Jones has a record of 22-2 and retired for eight years before deciding to return to the ring in 2011.

Michael Oliveira vs. Acelino Freitas Bout Set for June 2nd

The undefeated Michael Oliveira (17-0) will be fighting four time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas (38-2) on June 2nd at the Conrad Punta Del Este and Resort Casino in Uruguay. This bout will air live on TV Global in Brazil and Uruguay television. Freitas has been retired for five years, but will be coming out of retirement to take on Oliveira nearly 20 pounds heavier than he has ever fought.

Showtime Announces Fight Camp 360 for Berto vs. Ortiz II

Showtime has a show similar to HBO’s 24/7, and that is their Fight Camp 360 boxing hype show. They’ll be broadcasting a three episode run of the documentary series to highlight the upcoming and highly anticipated Berto vs. Ortiz rematch.

Broadway Boxing Returns to Roseland Ballroom June 14th

DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series returns to the Roseland Ballroom for its third installment of 2012. Welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme (14-0) will be headlining the card. Undefeated Seanie Monaghan (13-0) will also be on the same card, and is a light heavyweight prospect to keep an eye on. Tickets can be purchased by calling DiBella entertainment at (212) 947-2577.

ESPN Friday Night Fights Tickets on Sale for July 13th in Chicago

ESPN Friday Night Fights will be broadcast from Chicago on July 13th at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. Former world champion Glen Johnson will be taking on Andrzej Fonfara in the main event, and Jose Castillo will be fighting Ivan Popoca. Tickets can be bought at www.ticketmaster.com

Jimmy Lange Suffers Injury, Card Canceled

Jimmy Lange suffered a leg injury during training camp that is preventing him from training for his bout scheduled for June 23, 2012. As a result, Jimmy Lange Boxing officials announced that the June 23rd event at the Patriot Center has been postponed. Officials hope to return to the Patriot Center later this year. Ticketholders can receive a refund from their point of purchase with online purchases automatically refunded.

Goosen Tutor Presents Live at the Lodge 1

Goosen Tutor Promotions is looking to create a series of boxing events to be held every two months at the legendary Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City, California. The Lodge is hosting its first boxing event since 1970. The first event will be on June 23, when former WBA Super Bantamweight World Champion fights undefeated 2008 Colombian Olympian Jhonatan Romero. WBC News: Martirosyan Declines to Fight Lara

The WBC has been trying to stage a mandatory challenger fight between some of their highly ranked fighters to determine the mandatory contender of the division. Vanes Martirosyan had been ordered to fight Erislandy Lara in an elimination bout to become the official challenger to Saul Alvarez, but Top Rank has commincuted to the WBC that Martirosyan has declined to fight Lara.
