Canelo Alvarez Works The Corner Of Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. As He Stepped Into The Ring One Final Time

Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. watched as his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., lost a clear decision to MMA legend, Anderson Silva. Despite his disappointment, Chavez Sr. went out and entertained a lively crowd.
At the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico, Chavez Sr. took on Hector Camacho Jr. While the retired Hall of Famer entered the ring on several occasions for numerous exhibitions, Chavez Sr. claimed that this one would be his last.
At 58, the Mexican star came out and gave it everything he had. Regardless of his advanced age, he entertained the crowd with his willingness to go all out. At times, Chavez Sr. flashed the sort of skill that made him a multiple division champion, 2011 Hall of Famer and a cultural icon
The customary three judges who sit in their ringside seats were neither present nor needed. At the end of their four round, two-minute exhibition, Chavez Sr. appeared to get the better of their exchanges and was loudly applauded for his efforts.
With only one round remaining, Chavez Sr. called up pound-for-pound star Canelo Alvarez who attended the event. Alvarez then cornered Chavez Sr. for the final round.
Following the event, Alvarez, who currently holds the WBA, WBO, WBC and Ring Magazine titles at 168 pounds, was proud to have participated. Although many have claimed that Alvarez has surpassed Chavez Sr. as the greatest Mexican fighter of all time, Alvarez would hear none of it.
“Chavez will always be the greatest Mexican fighter ever,” said Alvarez. “It was an honor to do this.

Oscar Valdez Is Motivated As Ever: “Losing Is Not An Option”

Oscar Valdez almost couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Following a tenth-round stoppage win over fringe contender Jayson Velez in July of 2020, WBC super featherweight titlist Miguel Berchelt (37-1, 33 KOs) entered the ring, placed his arm around Valdez and posed for pictures. The win for Valdez was the last hurdle that needed to be cleared before he was given a title shot against the aforementioned Berchelt.
Watching from his ringside seat on the night was Hall of Famer and one of the best Mexican fighters in boxing history in Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. While Valdez may have picked up the win, Chavez Sr. doesn’t believe he has enough in the tank to handle Berchelt.
“He lacked a little more aggressiveness and wasn’t punching as much,” said Chavez Sr. to ESPN Deportes. ”I thought he looked ordinary. That Oscar Valdez, the one I saw, I think is not enough to beat Miguel Berchelt.”
Valdez, 30, knows good and well that almost no one expects him to pull off the victory this weekend. That much doesn’t really bother him. However, when the former WBO featherweight belt holder heard that someone he reveres so much is also picking against him, Valdez (28-0, 22 KOs) admits that his former idol gave him major fuel to prove him wrong.
“That motivates me, said Valdez to Jose Luis Camarillo. “I have listened to my great idol Julio Cesar Chavez, who says Berchelt is going to win. That motivates me. There is nothing more beautiful in life than when you stay quiet and let your fists speak for themselves.”
There are a number of reasons why Chavez Sr. and a long list of others are on the side of Berchelt. For starters, the undefeated former champion struggled in his last contest before moving up in weight against Adam Lopez. In what figured to be an easy night at the office, Valdez found himself down on the canvas in round two before ultimately stopping his man in the seventh round. Valdez also has only one contest under his belt at his new weight class.
As for Berchelt, he’s been blasting out just about everyone to the tune of 16 knockout wins in his last 17 bouts.
Despite the impressive run and regardless of what his naysayers have to say, Valdez is trying to stay away from the negativity. Those who are dubious of his chances of winning are more than entitled to their opinion. With that being said, Valdez can’t wait to shut the mouths of everyone.
“I never let a bad comment affect me, I always try to make sure everything is fine in my camp. I stay positive – that’s what wins the fights. A good atmosphere, arrive well prepared physically, but even more so mentally. Losing is not an option.”

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Takes On Mario Abel Cazares On The Undercard Of His Father’s Exhibition Bout Against Jorge Arce On September 25th

Like father, like son.
Sort of.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has fallen short of the legendary name provided by his hall of fame father, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. on several occasions. With high profile losses to Canelo Alvarez, Daniel Jacobs and Sergio Martinez–Chavez Jr. has consistently sullied his last name.
A lack of motivation and preparation have surrounded his career. Now however, he could be receiving a well needed dose of both.
Chavez Jr. will return to action in the co main event slot on September 25th, against Mario Abel Cazares. The Mexican native will look to have his hand raised in victory on the night, then quickly exit the ring and take a seat in the front row to watch his father take on fellow Mexican legend Jorge Arce.
The former three division world champion and 2010 hall of fame inductee, will take on the aforementioned Arce in a three round exhibition that will have mandated headgear. This of course, will be the second contest between these two men under these circumstances. The first came last year, and despite their advanced age, 58 for Chavez and 41 for Arce, the pair put on a crowd pleasing show.
With nearly 200 wins between them, the outcome of their contest will not be counted on their records. For Chavez Jr. on the other hand, his matchup against Cazares has been sanctioned as an official contest.
The opportunity to face off against Chavez Jr. is something that Cazares has been screaming for. The fairly unheralded prospect brings to the ring an ostensible amateur pedigree. In the unpaid ranks several years ago, Cazares handed current pound for pound star Canelo Alvarez one of the very few defeats he accumulated in his amateur career.
For the Chavez household, the entire card will seemingly be a family affair as his youngest son, Omar, will also make an appearance on the card as well. Standing across the ring from him on the night will be undefeated prospect Karim Arce.
