Boxing Insider Notebook: Gonzalez, Huck, the WBC, Andre Ward, more

This is the Boxing Insider Notebook for the week of April 23rd to April 30th 2012, covering news and events from the world of boxing.

Gonzalez Defeats Rojas, Salgado Defeats Honorio

Jhonny Gonzalez improved his record to 52-7 when he defeated Elio Rojas this weekend in Cancun, Mexico. Gonzalez won with scores of 117-111, 116-112, and 116-111. Juan Carlos Salgado also fought on this card and defeated Martin Honorio with scores of 114-112, 114-112, and 113-113. Salgado scored two knockdowns in this fight, and judging by the scores, he badly needed them.

Roman Gonzalez Remains Undefeated

Roman Gonzalez took on Ramon Garcia on Saturday in Pomona, California. Gonzalez improved his record to 32-0 with a fourth round TKO at 2:09. He retains a junior flyweight title.

Dirks vs. Ulrich, Huck vs, Afolabi On For May 5th

Dustin Dirks and Thomas Ulrich will be colliding on Mayrth in Erfurt, Germany in the light heavyweight division. Dustin Dirks is currently 23-0 while Thomas Ulrich is 32-6. This bout has been scheduled twice before, only to be canceled twice. The card will also feature WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck (34-2) defending his title against Ola Afolabi (19-2-3). Super Middleweight Champion Robert Stieglitz will also put his belt on the line.

Biosse vs. Spina Announced For May 24th

On May24th Providence Rhode Island will be hosting a card featuring two hometown heroes facing off against each other. Vladine Biosse (12-1-1) will defend his New England Super Middleweight Title on May 24th against Joey “K.O. Kid” Spina (26-2-2)at the Twin River Event Center. Chavez-Lee Fight Canceled in El Paso

Middleweight World Champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee were set to battle in El Paso for Chavez’s belt; however, that bout has been canceled. Some have cited security reasons for the fight being pulled. Bob Arum has claimed that racism is the reason the title fight has been pulled. Senator Rodriguez, D-El Paso, is outraged. Kevin Iole theorizes it might be linked to a landmark book on education. Regardless, the fight isn’t happening in El Paso.

Tickets Still Available For May 18th Card At Dover Downs

On May 18th, WealthTV and Go Fight Live.will be broadcasting an event at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino. The main event will be Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence (14-2-2) taking on Mike Mollo (20-3-1) for the NABA Heavyweight Title. Also on the card will be Mike Stewart (48-7-3) defending his welterweight title. Tickets can be purchased by visiting doverdowns.com

Boxing Returns to Lowell, MA on May 9th

“Irish” Joey McCreedy will be taking on Benjamin Diaz for the USBO Super Middleweight Championship, and Vivian Harris will be taking on Jermaine White for the USBO Welterweight Championship at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on May 9th, 2012. Joe McCreedy and Sean Eklund will be fighting on May 9th, and are the nephews of Micky Ward and Dicky Eklund. Tickets can be bought at www.cfcpromotion.com.

Mads Larsen vs. Lorenzo Di Giacomo Announced for June 2nd

The June 2nd the Nordic Fight Night in Herning fight card has been announced. The main event will be Mads Larsen (51-3) taking on Lorenzo Di Giacomo (41-6) in a make or break bout for both fighters. Also on the card will be a co-featured main event of WBA/WBC/WBO Female Welterweight Champion Cecilia Braekhus (19-0) against Jessica Balgoun (22-1). Tickets can be bought at www.belletnet.dk.

WBC News- Ward Declared Champion in Recess

WBC Super Middleweight World Champion Andre Ward has been declared a “Champion in Recess” until he has recovered from a broken hand and is ready to resume his career. In the meantime, the WBC Board of Governors has sanctioned the fight between No. 1 ranked Anthony Dirrell and No. 3 ranked Nikola Sjekloca for the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship.

Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade Featured on May 5th ESPN FNF Card

Despite Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting on May 5th, ESPN will be hosting a special edition of Friday Night Fights on that same day–even though it is a Saturday. The card will feature the undefeated 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade (16-0) fighting against Rudy Cisneros (12-3) in the main event. Afterwards a closed circuit showing of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto will be broadcast on the jumbo screen. Tickets can be purchased at www.starboxing.com

Snooki Promotions Announces Opponent for Hyland

Snooki Promotions is putting on another boxing card on May 12th in Poughkeepsie, NY. On that date, Patrick Hyland will be fighting Frankie Archuleta (27-9-1) in the main event at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center. Hyland is trained by Tracy Harris Patterson, the son of former Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson. Tickets can be bought at www.finalroundpromotions.com

Sergio Martinez to Attend 2012 Hall of Fame Weekend

The International Boxing Hall of Fame has announced that middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez will attend festivities for the 23rd annual Hall of Fame Induction Weekend set for June 7th-10th. While in Canastota, Martinez will conduct two public workout session, on June 8th and June 9th on the grounds of the Hall of Fame Museum.

Riddick Bowe to Make Guest Appearance at Boxing Event at Harrahs Chester

This Friday night at Harrahs in Chester, Joey Eye Boxing Promotions will present a night of championship boxing featuring a main event for the Pennsylvania State Light Heavyweight Championship between Tony Ferrante and Dhafir Smith. Riddick Bowe will also be in attendance to sign autographs and take photos with fans.

Selby Training with Mayweather for May 25th

On May 25th, Lee Selby will be fighting at the Newport Sports Centre, when he defends his Commonwealth Featherweight Title against Patrick Okine. The bout is being broadcast on BoxNation. Selby saw firsthand Mayweather’s preparations for his super-fight against Miguel Cotto. Tickets can be purchased at www.frankwarren.tv
