World Boxing Council Responds To Manny Pacquiao Vacating Title

Posted on 02/09/2011

From WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán:

In reponse to the recent announcement that the WBC super welterweight title is now vacant, the WBC received a nice letter from former champion Manny Pacquiao stating that he will no longer fight at that weight, and that in the future he expects to fight only at 147 pounds and hopes and expects to someday fight for the WBC world title at that weight.

We responded in a letter that Manny is a highly-respected boxer with the WBC, and that we are happy that he understood that titles cannot be frozen because there are many boxers fighting every day for a title opportunity and we should not keep them waiting.

The WBC thinks of Manny Pacquiao as a hero, and our doors are always open to him.

Saul Alvarez’ representatives immediately contacted the WBC to say that they are ready to fight for the title as soon as the WBC states.
