Omar Henry Passes Away from Cancer at 25

Posted on 02/01/2013

It was announced early this morning that undefeated middleweight prospect Omar Henry passed away. The 25-year-old learned he had gall bladder cancer when he routinely went to the hospital to get examined for pains in his side. For nearly three months he was hospitalized at the University of Chicago, fighting for his life.

Henry defined what the word fighter means. Inside the ring the up-and-coming light middleweight was 12-0-1 with 9 wins coming by way of knockout. He had heavy hands, strong will, and an unrelenting heart.

Despite the early success he found in his career, he maintained the humility that drew fans across the world to him. He fought simply to pursue what he loved doing, and one day aspired to be a world champion.

At 25-years old Henry expired way before his time; but in the short period of time the boxing world was privileged enough to become familiar with the name Omar Henry, he had become quite the inspiration.

Never shying away from an opponent inside the squared circle, Henry stood toe-to-toe with the cancer and fought hard for his life. Through his hospitalization he never asked the world to feel sorry for him, but often thanked his loyal fans for their ongoing support and prayers.

Although Omar Henry was never given the chance to raise the world championship belt above his head, crowning the most sought after achievement in boxing, he is, and always will be, recognized as a champion to boxing fans worldwide.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Henry family now.
