On Sunday evening Carshalton Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor scored his first professional win, over Luton’s Duane Grimes, which sets him up nicely for his upcoming showdown with former WBF Intercontinental Welterweight title challenger James Todd, at Olivia Goodwin’s Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ double title headlined event at York Hall on Saturday 4th June 2011.
With the Todd fight looming Connor was back in training, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, first thing on Monday morning in order to prepare for what is possibly his toughest fight to date.
Following a grueling workout, under the ever watchful eyes of his coach Alec Wilkey, Connor spoke briefly on the victory over Grimes before moving on to give his views on the 4th June date with Todd, “Yeah, I got my first win, boxed a guy that had one fight before, been stopped in the fight. He was a bit of an unknown quantity, I didn’t really know anything about him.
It was a bit of a double edged sword, if I won it’s a first win but there’s nothing from it really. If I lost obviously I would have lost to a guy that had lost one before and was last in the rankings.
I’m just happy to have get the win, which I always knew I was capable of, it’s still not me at a hundred percent, probably not even seventy percent. I know I’m better than that and can do a lot more even though I got the win. So it’s onwards and upwards from this point. Hopefully I’ll get another win on the 4th June
I’ve seen a video of James Todd, he’s more like a come forward type. A guy that keeps his hands high. From the video I have seen a few things that I can work on, along as I’m fit, which I will be, there’s no reason why I wont get another win and then I can move on to bigger and better things.
There’s no way I’m losing this one, I’ve built up a bit of momentum now and it’s time to capitalise on that. I’m going to move forward and start getting somewhere now.
It don’t bother me at all that he’s fought for a title, what does that mean, nothing, he got beat anyway, he got well bashed, he got stopped. If things go the way I want them to go it’ll be a repeat result. Hopefully I’ll stop him again.
I’m going out there to win obviously,I want to do it in style and show everyone what I am capable of. “
