BRAWL IN THE FALL RESULTS
ANNUAL OUTDOOR EVENT BRINGS THE FIREWORKS TO ROCHESTER HILLS
By Samuel Crawford, Jr.
On Saturday night, Bay City, Michigan’s Impact Fight League 185-lb Middleweight Champion, Charlie Cosens, successfully defended his title with a five-round unanimous decision over Holland, Michigan’s Erick Lozano.
Fighting in the main event of promoter Joseph Donofrio’s “BRAWL IN THE FALL” mixed-martial-arts event at Meadow Brook Music Festival in Rochester Hills, the two warriors waged a very competitive and highly skilled bout and each man had his moments.
Lozano landed some heavy punches, but in the end, Cosens’ more effective technique on the ground earned him the win.
In the co-main event, 42-year-old Gordon “Shotgun” Shell had his grudge-match against former business partner Gary Palmer cancelled at the last minute when Palmer failed to show up for the fight.
With a documentary film crew rolling, Shell had to settle for quick TKO 1 victory in his 185-pound bout against late sub Michael Guindon. Shell ended things with a barrage of punches early. Guindon stayed down for several minutes after the stoppage but was up and able to leave the cage under his own power.
Shell did, however, still did partner up with Donofrio and reach his goal to donate a large portion of ticket sales to the Michigan Humane Society and the Detroit Dog Rescue.
In a battle non-title fight for Midwestern supremacy in the 205-lb light heavyweight division, former IFL Champion and #1-rated Shamir Garcia of Detroit destroyed current champion and #2-rated Victor Jones of Grand Rapids via KO 1.
Garcia scored the knockout of the night with a spectacular spinning back fist that dropped a dazed Jones to the canvas. The referee stepped in before Garcia could follow up his attack on the defenseless Jones.
And in a Women’s 125-lb Super-Flyweight Impact Fight League Championship battle, Crystal Ceasar of Cadillac, Michigan, picked up the vacant title by defeating Sanya Cordray by five-round split decision.
In an extremely close fight Caesar’s striking gave her just enough of an edge to take a very hard-fought victory.
145 pounds. George Simos defeated Corey Farmer by TKO 1.
Simos dropped Farmer with a round kick to the head and followed up with strikes until the ref stopped the bout.
185 pounds. Bobby Morrison defeated Dale Herweyer by UD 3.
Morrison was in control, earning a competitive but clear win.
145 pounds. David Kubacki defeated Casey Clarida by TKO 1.
Kubacki scored with a series of unanswered punches until the referee stepped in.
Heavyweights. Jay Albert defeated Jeff Carpenter by TKO 1.
Albert hurt Carpenter early with a round kick to the head and then again with an uppercut. Carpenter absorbed a series of blows until the ref stopped the bout with Carpenter still on his feet.
155 pounds. Soony Abrahim defeated Matt Schwabb by Tap Out 1.
Abrahim executed a perfect Rear Naked Choke forcing Schwabb to tap out.
205 pounds. Chad Griz defeated Dennis Brohl by SD 3.
Griz was able to overcome several heavy blows and fatigue to take a hotly contested split decision.
155 pounds. Ruben Baraic defeated Brandon Maddox by UD 3.
Maddox scored with the heavier punches while the fighters were on their feet but Baraic’s superior ground game earned him the victory in a close fight. Baraic suffered a serious cut early in the fight, but managed to fight through it in a gutsy effort.
115 pound title. Joey Haney defeated Garrett Piquette by Tap Out 1.
Haney executed a slick Arm Bar, forcing Piquette to tap out.
