Published by BoxingInsider

Status:  Former WBO Heavyweight champion

Ht: 6-1 Wt:  228

DOB: June 5, 1973 In: Indianapolis, Indiana

Childhood Heroes:  “First and foremost, I’d have to say Marvin Hagler. Second, I’d have to say Muhammad Ali. Third, I’d say Sugar Ray Leonard. Then Joe Louis [smiles].”

Nickname:  Lefty, Relentless.

Hobbies/Interests:  “Ah man, I used to love to go paintballin’. Go fishing and things like that. That was my thing, you know?”

Favorite Movies:  “Pulp Fiction and Snatch.”

Favorite TV Shows:  “Right now, Dave Chappelle. The funniest show ever, right now [smiles].”

Musical Tastes:  “International. I love everything. That’s just me.”

Early Boxing Memory:  “Man, coming home with busted lips and bloody noses every day (age 7). I just sucked it up because I wanted to be as good as the people I saw in my gym. And I ran ‘em all out of the gym [smiles]. (Like who?) Oh man, guys like Clarence White, wow, man, Archie Chambers, Frankie Minton, some old time fighters. Half of them aren’t even fighting anymore. But when you’re seven everybody is a big and a great fighter to you. Sammy Nesmith. Those type of guys.”

Childhood Dream:  “I wanted to be Bruce Lee. That’s how I ended up in boxing. I used to always watch TV - Kung Fu Theater. And my mother used to see me choppin’ around the house, tearin’ up the house. So she was like, Okay, we gonna get rid of some of that energy. So we gonna take you up to a recreational center up the street. And she took me there and dropped me off and I’ve been at it ever since.”

First Job:  “I was going door-to-door, to ask people if I can cut there grass (age 8 in Indianapolis).”

First Car:  “1970 green Pontiac Catalina. Loved it.”

Pre-Fight Feeling:  “For me, I always try to do my checklist. Did I do everything I knew I could do to get ready for a fight? And if I have, without a shadow of a doubt, I can’t do nothing but leave it in God’s hands. When I get in there. And know that if it’s his will, I will be victorious.”

Favorite Meal:  “Pizza.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal:  “Cinnamon Toast Crunch [laughs].”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor:  “Oreo cookie - I forget the proper name of it.”

Greatest Sports Moment:  “Would be pronouncing God, going into the Klitschko fight, showing the faith of a man through his will and determination and in the name of Jesus Christ and then winning the fight. Feeling the spirit of my trainer (Bill Slayton) can rest in peace. Because his dream was always for me to be a heavyweight champion. And on his deathbed, he didn’t want to get better - he wanted to get better so he could come and help me become a world champion. To me - no matter if I go and win every title ever created - to me the Klitschko fight is the greatest fight of all times in my life.”

Most Painful Moment:  “Was letting my ego get the best of me. Going into fight Cliff Etienne. Feeling like, Oh man, this guy’s out of prison. I’ve been fighting my whole life. I’m Lamon Brewster, I’m 22-0 with 20 knockouts. I’m going in to just hit him to knock him out. Went in there…you know, I always beat people because of my skill. Not because I’m tough. Or because I punch hard. But that fight I decided I’m Lamon Brewster. I didn’t use my mind, I used my ego. Went in there. So I lost. And as a result, I tore my knee. And as a result, that made me lay off, as a result, that made me gain weight. So then when I came off the bed, doctor said I could fight, I tried so hard to get myself back into shape, to get back in the ring, to prove to the world it was a fluke. That when I fought Charles Shufford right after that, I lost so much weight so fast, I was weak in the fight. That’s why I never said, Okay, you guys were wrong for feeling the way you felt about me. Because if I had watched me on television, looked bad twice on HBO, I would have said the same thing.”

Favorite Boxers To Watch:  “James Toney. Because the guy talks the talk, he walks the walk, and - to me - he’s one of the greatest fighters of all time. And I love James, because James - man, I’ve seen him do it in the gym, come in out of shape and go 15 rounds. (How does he do it?) I don’t know, but that guy’s eyes, reflexes, everything about him - great fighter. I like Floyd Mayweather. Oscar de la hoya - classy guy. He fights so hard and at the same time he’s such a gentleman. He’s not a dirty fighter. And that’s what boxing’s about. Boxing, to me, is a sweet science. And to me, Oscar de la hoya demonstrates that. Not just in the ring but out of the ring. You know, there are several fighters out there that I really like. For so many different reasons.”

Favorite Fights:  “Hmmm. Chavez-Taylor. Chavez is another - I like idolize that dude. Orlando Canizales. There’s so many guys that I can think of that I would say favorite fights. Jirov-Toney - I really took a liking to that.”

People Qualities Most Admired:  “I really like people who just try to be themselves. Like, I love people who believe in God. I don’t discriminate against those who don’t. But it’s just that in my life I’ve been through so much struggle. It’s impossible for me to stand in the presence of another man, say God don’t exist. Because he brought me through hell and brimstone. Many times. From sleepin’ in a house with just a toaster oven to keep our room warm - me and my mother and brother all curled up in the winter as kids. You understand? Nobody can tell me God don’t exist. Somebody who believes in God - I just really feel like, Ah like this is my brother. That’s just how I feel. You can do anything in this world if you just believe in yourself. That’s what I want to get across to the world.”
