While he was touted as being a tough and rugged competitor, Isaac Cruz was expected to fold under the pressure of hard-hitting Baltimore native, Gervonta Davis. Despite those preconceived notions, Cruz more than held his own in front of a jam-packed crowd at Staples Center late last night in Los Angeles, California.

With Cruz’s pressure proving to be unrelenting and his chin holding up just fine to the deleterious knockout power of Davis, the Mexican product gave the heavily favored 135-pound titlist all he could handle. As the final few seconds ticked off the clock, an overjoyed Cruz raised his hands in the air, believing he had done more than enough to pocket the victory.

However, the 23-year-old was left disappointed as Davis went on to eke out a close unanimous decision. Judge Zachary Young scored their contest 116-112 in favor of Davis, while both Carla Caiz and Max DeLuca had it a bit closer, turning in idential scorecards of 115-113. Though Davis was ultimately able to preserve his undefeated record, in the opinion of Floyd Mayweather, the promoter of Davis, he doesn’t believe their contest was that particularly close.

In fact, if it was up to the newly retired Hall of Famer, he would like to see new, fresh, young blood being add to the judging pool.

“We got these judges in the fight game right now,” said Mayweather to a group of reporters. “Judges are 75 years old, 80 years old. When it’s time to hang it up, hang it up. I’m not being biased. If Tank got his ass whopped, I’m a say you know what, he got his ass whooped. There were probably four rounds that the guy could’ve got. But eight rounds he was getting outboxed.”

Unlike most bouts involving Davis, the multiple division titlist was unable to close the show. During the second half of their contest, in particular, he appeared content with boxing and moving as opposed to vehemently looking for the fight-ending blow.

Once their showdown came to a close, Davis revealed that his reluctance to seek the knockout came as a direct result of hurting his left hand. Still, while Davis saw his 16 fight knockout streak come to an end, Mayweather was proud of his young protege and his ability to adjust on the fly.

Although it may not be the sort of fighting style that everyone has grown accustomed to seeing from Davis, in the end, Mayweather believes Davis will benefit from it in the long run.

“The name of the game is boxing, not slugging,” continued Mayweather. “When boxing is all over and you hang it up like me, you still want to have your facilities. That’s more important than anything. F*ck the money. Your health is more important than anything. The name of the game is to hit and not get hit.”

Gervonta Davis never appeared unnerved at any point in his career. As the now three-division world titlist prepares to enter the ring for the final time in 2021, the 27-year-old pugnacious knockout artist seems even more sure of himself.

In just a few short hours, the Baltimore native will look to end the world title dreams of Isaac Cruz. The two will officially battle it out at Staples Center In Los Angeles, California, on Showtime pay-per-view.

As with all boxing events, both foes came face to face following their weigh-ins yesterday afternoon. Cruz, 23, stood toe to toe with Davis, refusing to be the first one to break away from their stare-off. While Davis ultimately broke first, he flexed his muscles intentionally in front of Cruz. The Mexican native, in turn, attempted to regain his position. However, Davis physically pushed Cruz aside before making his way off the stage.

While Cruz first appeared irritated by the entire ordeal, he broke into a full-blown grin as he believes the actions of Davis were a direct result of fear.

“He’s gonna lose,” said Cruz to ESNEWS. “He’s afraid.”

Cruz, the winner of 17 consecutive contests, believes he’s on the verge of having his dreams realized. Originally, the highly ranked 135-pound contender was set to make an appearance on the undercard of the event. But, with Rolando Romero, the previously scheduled opponent of Davis, forced to withdraw due to mounting legal troubles, Cruz was elevated to the main event.

Presently, not only is Davis heavily favored to win his upcoming clash against Cruz but, the hard-hitting multiple-division titlist is expected to do so via stoppage. Still, despite those assumptions, Cruz is undeterred in his self-belief.

Considering the long list of former Mexican fighters that have come before him, Cruz is anxious to have his name etched amongst them.

“He’s gonna be defeated for the first time in his career by a great Mexican.”

Before Teofimo Lopez stepped into the ring against George Kambosos Jr. last weekend at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, there was an undeniable aura surrounding him.

The 24-year-old New Yorker saw his stock rise to unprecedented heights following an unlikely victory over Vasyl Lomachenko one year prior. Though Lopez was tabbed as one of boxing’s youngest and brightest stars, Kambosos Jr. stood both unimpressed and undeterred.

As a pro-Lopez crowd continued to cheer him on, they were left speechless as Lopez was dropped in the opening round before ultimately suffering the first loss of his career.

Just a few days from now, Isaac Cruz will have his own opportunity to upset the applecart. The 23-year-old lightweight contender will face by far the biggest challenge of his career when he takes on WBA “Regular” titlist Gervonta Davis at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, on December 5th.

Despite reeling off 17 straight victories, Cruz is considered a sizable underdog. Regardless of the preconceived notions surrounding his chances against Davis this Sunday night, Cruz simply points to last weekend’s results as a reminder.

“You know what Kambosos showed people? That there are no superheroes on this earth,” said Cruz during an interview with SecondsOut. “Everybody is human, everybody has a weakness. I’m going to find Gervonta’s weakness and then we’re going to see what happens Sunday night.”

Originally, Cruz was taken aback when he was first informed that he would be moved up from the undercard to the main event. Previously, highly ranked lightweight contender Rolando Romero was set to take on Davis. However, with the outspoken and flamboyant power puncher removed from the card due to several ongoing legal issues, Cruz was gifted the opportunity.

For Davis, changing his preparations to deal with a much shorter fighter as opposed to the taller Romero, was something he revealed was a flawless transition.

Most recently, the hard-hitting Baltimore product was last seen in the ring six months prior at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, against Mario Barrios.

While Barrios proved to be one of his more difficult opponents, Davis eventually floored his man before finishing him off in the 11th. Considering the violent nature in which Davis normally ends his fights, Cruz reveals that he’s taken his preparation to another level.

While Kambosos Jr. did provide Cruz with a bit of added motivation, the Mexican native admits that his true drive comes from an entirely different source.

“What Kambosos showed us is that champions can be beaten. But my inspiration isn’t him. It’s my wife and it’s my kid.”

No matter how thick the headphones are in the ears of Gervonta Davis, he continues to hear the doubters and naysayers.

With just a few days remaining before his showdown against Isaac Cruz, Davis once again finds himself as the centerpiece of scathing chastisement.

Though Davis has won world titles across multiple weight classes, he feels as if what he’s accomplished is never enough. On June 26th, of 2021, Davis attempted to prove his standing amongst boxing’s elite. On the night, the hard-hitting Baltimore native successfully moved up two weight divisions to hand previously undefeated Mario Barrios the first loss of his career. In the process, Davis ripped away his WBA “Regular” super lightweight title to become a three-division champion.

Yet, despite his efforts, the resume of Davis has been lambasted time and time again. While the 27-year-old has done his best to ignore the noise, he’s bemused by the constant chatter.

“They only criticize me,” said Davis during an interview with Fight Hub TV. “They don’t say nothing about the other fighters and who they fighting. They always say me.”

In spite of what he deems as unfair treatment, Davis is focused on continuing his ride up the ladder. This upcoming weekend, on December 5th, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Davis will look to make quick work of Isaac Cruz.

Originally, Davis was set to take on long-time bitter rival, Rolando Romero. However, with Romero facing several legal issues, he was pulled from the card and subsequently replaced with Cruz.

Although lesser known in the public eye, Cruz has reeled off 17 consecutive victories since his lone defeat against Luis Miguel Montano in 2016.

Still, whether it was Romero or Cruz, the overwhelming thought process surrounding both fighters is that neither will pose much of a threat to Davis. Regardless of his level of opposition, Davis has taken a close look at the names his contemporaries are stepping into the ring.

By and large, the Baltimore product remains unimpressed with their competition as well. But, Davis can’t seem to understand why his critics continue to point the finger in only his direction.

“I don’t know bro. I don’t know what it is.”

Gervonta Davis has always had a deep amount of respect and admiration for Canelo Alvarez. On numerous occasions, the multiple-time belt holder has admitted to stopping everything he’s currently doing to turn on the television and watch Alvarez in the ring. On November 6th, earlier this month at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, it was no different.

On the night, Alvarez placed his WBA, WBC, and WBO 168 pound titles on the line against former IBF titlist, Caleb Plant. Although Plant made things far more difficult for Alvarez than many were expecting, Alvarez eventually found his rhythm.

The Mexican star pounded Plant during the latter portion of their contest before closing the show in the 11th round. With the victory, Alvarez would become the division’s first undisputed champion of all time.

As the pound-for-pound star sat on the shoulders of trainer Eddy Reynoso to celebrate his victory, Davis proceeded to juxtapose himself to the newly minted undisputed champion.

“Canelo is me at 168,” said Davis on his social media account following Alvarez’s win.

As Davis continues to analyze both the skills and power of Alvarez, the hard-hitting Baltimore native is doubling down on what he previously stated.

“The things that I see him do in a fight, that’s the things I do too,” said Davis during an interview with Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast. “I feel as though we have similar fighting styles. Once he feels like he got you hurt, he’s getting you out of there. What you see with me? If I feel like I got you hurt, I’m getting you out of there.”

Davis, 27, is just a few weeks away from proving that his comparisons to Alvarez aren’t outlandish. On December 5th, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles California, Davis will look to make quick work of Isaac Cruz. If he’s successful in doing so, Davis could pick up his 25th stoppage victory in just 26 fights.

Gervonta Davis couldn’t wait to get his hands on Rolando “Rolly” Romero. The 135-pound contender spent the past several years poking and antagonizing Davis at no end. After reaching his breaking point, Davis agreed to squash their differences by squaring off in the ring.

Although the two were officially scheduled to throw down on December 5th, at Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California, Romero was removed from their contest altogether as numerous allegations of sexual assault have been filed. As Romero now turns his attention to the more serious matter, team Davis began the search for a new opponent.

With the opportunity to face the biggest name of his career, 135-pound contender Isaac Cruz happily signed his name on the dotted line. Since suffering defeat at the hands of journeymen Luis Miguel Montano in 2016, Cruz has put together one of the more impressive streaks in the division, winning 17 straight.

Earlier this year, Cruz had a career-best performance against former titlist Francisco Vargas. Cruz went on to easily outpoint his man, winning a wide unanimous decision. In spite of Cruz looking nearly unbeatable in his past 17 fights, he’s still considered a big-time underdog against Davis.

The 26-year-old Baltimore product recently pounded out the much larger Mario Barrios at 140 pounds to capture the WBA “Regular” title. For his matchup against Cruz, Davis has opted to defend his WBA “Regular” championship at 135 pounds.

Unlike Romero, Davis has no built up animosity towards his new opponent. In fact, he reveres him. However, when it’s all said and done, Davis is heading into their showdown with the mindset of not leaving it in the hands of the judges.

“I respect Isaac Cruz for stepping up and taking the fight, but everyone knows what I do,” said Davis. “I come in looking for the knockout and that’s exactly what I’m going to do in this fight. I’m back in Los Angeles where the stars shine and I’m going to light it up against Isaac Cruz at Staples Center on December 5.”

Once upon a time, boxing was considered to be in a golden era. Leading the way were “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, and last but certainly not least – Thomas Hearns.

At various points throughout their careers, the four laced up their gloves and fought each other in the ring. More than anything, due to their otherworldly skills and vast accomplishments, they were intrinsically tied together and known as the “Four Kings.”

In today’s day and age, Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney are now considered the “Four Kings” of this era. While they’re all viewed as incredibly talented and future ambassadors of the sport, Davis is of the belief that his star power shines brighter than them all.

“The four kings, who can actually draw people?” Questioned Davis to a group of reporters. “Who do they really want to watch? Me. Everybody calls me out because they want money, they want fame.”

On December 5th, later this year, Davis will look to put approximately 20,000 butts in seats when he takes on Rolando “Rolly” Romero at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Presently, Davis is confident that he’ll produce another sold-out event. In the case of his fellow young contemporaries, Davis doubts their ability to pack arenas and sell pay-per-views.

Davis, 26, has particularly taken aim at Teofimo Lopez and his supposed star appeal. The unified 135-pound titlist is currently scheduled to return to the ring one week before Davis on November 27th, at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

News of Lopez headlining an event at the much smaller Hulu Theater, a venue that holds approximately 5,600 fans, as opposed to the Garden’s big room, a locale that hosts upwards of 20,000 people, was laughable to Davis.

In an act to debunk the notion that Lopez is some sort of star, Davis rips into his fellow young rival.

“He can’t even sell tickets. He about to fight in New York and that only holds what? 4,000? Tell him to sell some tickets then holla at me, bum ass n*gga.”

There’s a consensus building around Gervonta Davis, one that Rolando Romero vehemently disagrees with.

By and large, Davis is known for his resounding knockout power. Having stopped all but one of his 25 career opponents, Davis has gained the reputation of being one of the sport’s most feared punchers. While his biggest asset lies within his two fists, Davis has also received praise for his overall boxing ability.

Rolando, on the other hand, finds the skills of Davis rudimentary. While the 26-year-old Las Vegas, native acknowledges that Davis is a hard hitter, when it comes to his all-around features in the ring, Rolando has a difficult time giving Davis any credit.

“That’s the thing I don’t get,” said Rolando during an interview with AB Boxing News. “He’s not that talented. Everybody talks about his boxing skills but he literally gets punched by everybody.”

Unlike most of his opponents, Davis was recently forced to dive deeper into his bag of tricks than usual. On June 26th, earlier this year at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta Georgia, Davis opted to move up two weight classes to take on former WBA “Regular” titlist, Mario Barrios.

A noticeably wary Davis fought cautiously on the outside early on before finding his rhythm in the second half. Ultimately, Davis would continue his knockout winning ways as he floored Barrios in the eighth and 11th rounds before referee Thomas Taylor waved things off in the penultimate round.

Despite scoring the knockout victory over a much larger man, Romero is both unafraid and unimpressed with what Davis brings to the table. Although the Baltimore product’s knockout power is often lauded, Rolando believes he should be viewed as an even bigger puncher.

With 12 stoppage wins in 14 pro fights, including a seventh-round drubbing against Anthony Yigit earlier this year, Rolando is of the belief that once he connects on the chin of Davis, not only will their contest come to an end, but the life of Davis will dramatically change in the process.

“He’s never going to be able to fight after this shit. He won’t be able to process anything. We’re going to need a cart to f*cking push him around.”

There’s little to no doubt that the lightweight division is jam-packed with several notable names. Particularly amongst the younger group. But as Teofimo Lopez Sr. takes a peek at the resumes of names such as Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, and Ryan Garcia – he’s noticing a consistent pattern.

“My son is the only one in the lightweight division stepping up to the toughest competition,” said Lopez Sr. to a group of reporters. “We’re the only one from the younger crowd that has the lineal belt. On ESPN, he’s pound for pound number five so we’re doing great things. These guys are just fighting guys to play it safe.”

While his son, Teofimo Lopez, could opt to follow a similar path, Lopez Sr. won’t allow it. In just his 15th pro fight, Lopez took on former IBF lightweight titlist Richard Commey on December 14th, 2019. After a bit of a sluggish start, Lopez violently ended the night of Commey in the second round.

With the win, Lopez not only draped his first world title across his shoulders, but he also lined up a date with former unified champion Vasyl Lomachenko. Despite Lopez being pegged as the significant underdog, he registered the colossal upset.

In the case of Haney, Davis, and Garcia, however, they have yet to face someone who holds the same credentials as Lomachenko. At the moment, Lopez has continued his bid to face the best either in or around or his weight class. Next up for the 24-year-old New York, native is an unspecified date against mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr.

Should Lopez successfully defend his lightweight titles, Lopez Sr. revealed that the plan would be to have his son make the trek five-pounds north to challenge undisputed 140-pound champion, Josh Taylor.

As for those who continue to place Lopez’s name next to his young contemporaries, Lopez Sr. shakes his head in disbelief. While he believes the likes of Garcia, Haney, and Davis are extremely talented – Lopez Sr. is of the mindset that his son is simply head and shoulders above them all.

“We’re chasing Josh Taylor, that’s the guy that we want. They don’t understand the game, you fight the best to become the best. My son is way ahead of them.”

Rolando “Rolly” Romero almost couldn’t believe his eyes.

On the lightweight contender’s desk was a fight contract signed by Gervonta Davis for a December 5th showdown. Wasting little to no time, Romero followed suit by inking his own signature on the dotted line as well.

Romero, 25, had long called for a showdown against Davis. Yet, the 135 pound highly ranked contender was convinced that both Davis, and his team, wouldn’t allow it to happen. Now, with a contest against Davis officially taking place, Romero believes Davis has just made the biggest mistake of his boxing career.

“This is about to be the best two months of my life,” said Romero during a self-recorded video. “He done f*cked up.”

Davis, who currently holds the WBA “Regular” title at both 135 and 140 pounds, picked up the latter in his most recent ring appearance. The Baltimore native opted to jump up two weight classes on June 26th, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia against Mario Barrios. While the handlers of Davis were concerned for his safety, he proved that there was nothing to worry about.

Davis would go on to box cautiously early on before ultimately picking up his aggression in the second half of their contest to register the 11th round stoppage victory. Although Davis has captured world titles in three separate weight classes, Romero’s resume isn’t as ballyhooed.

The Las Vegas resident would win the interim WBA 135 pound title against Jackson Marinez late last year. Eventually, Romero saw his title run truncated due to the sanctioning body putting an end to the proliferation of world titles in every weight class.

In his most recent trip to the ring, Romero shrugged off the excessively overweight Anthony Yigit to stop him in the seventh round earlier this year.

Considering that Romero holds a knockout percentage of 85.71%, he’s fairly certain that not only will he brutally knockout Davis, but that it won’t take him very long to find the fight ending shot.

“He bout to get knocked out in one f*cking round. Put all your money on me to knock this mother f*cker the fuck out.”

There aren’t many who are clamoring to get into the ring with Gervonta Davis. After all, the hard-hitting Baltimore native has gone on to stop all but one of the 25 opponents he’s had in his brief career. But while Davis has shown the ability to end fights in the blink of an eye, Rolando “Rolly” Romero, has continually urged Davis to step foot inside the ring against him. After his persistent call-outs, Romero has had his wish granted.

“I’m back,” said Davis on his social media account. “Dec 5th at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Showtime PPV vs Rollie.”

Davis, 26, had grown tired of the constant trash talk hurled in his direction by Romero. In his most recent ring appearance, the Baltimore native opted to jump two weight classes to take on former WBA super lightweight “Regular” champion, Mario Barrios.

Despite Davis picking up the 11th round stoppage victory, Romero continued to antagonize him. Although the 25-year-old Romero campaigns at 135 pounds, he’s stated on numerous occasions that he would have no problem moving up to the 140-pound division to accommodate Davis. Currently, it is unknown at what weight class their contest will take place.

Romero’s self-belief that he’ll defeat Davis, no matter where their contest takes place, stems from not only believing he’s the better overall fighter, but also the concussive knockout power he’s displayed as well.

On July 17th, at AT&T Center in San Antonio Texas, Romero was set to take on Anthony Yigit in a 135-pound clash. However, Yigit stepped onto the scales one day prior weighing 140 ¼. Viewing Yigit’s added weight as inconsequential, Romero opted to take him on anyway. In spite of the weight differential, Romero dominated their matchup, registering two knockdowns before ending things violently in the seventh round.

With Romero claiming that he’ll not only beat Davis but conclusively stop him, he’ll get his opportunity on December 5th.

The prevailing thought process in boxing circles is that Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Ryan Garcia, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, and Shakur Stevenson are future stars in the sport of boxing. Those sentiments are something that Bill Haney, Devin Haney’s father, agrees with.

Unsurprisingly, Bill believes that his son is the cream of the crop. But, of all those aforementioned fighters, he views one as being by far the biggest threat to his offspring and his future goals.

“Tank has always been the most dangerous fighter of those future or possible opponents,” said Bill Haney during an interview with FightHype.com. “Make no mistake about it.”

Recently, Davis only re-enforced the comments of Bill Haney. After dominating the competition at 130 and 135 pounds, the hard-hitting Baltimore native tried his hand at 140 pounds. In his first contest in his new weight division, Davis took on WBA “Regular” belt holder, Mario Barrios.

Despite forfeiting the advantage in the height, reach and weight departments, Davis went on to defeat his much bigger opponent. Any questions of Davis and whether or not his unrelenting power would carry, was immediately answered as he dropped Barrios a total of three times before ultimately picking up the 11th round stoppage win.

The victory may have garnered Davis even more respect in the boxing world, but Bill Haney found his contest against Barrios as essentially inconsequential in how he views the 26-year-old knockout artist.

“I didn’t need to see him against Mario Barrios for me to know that he’s always been the most dangerous.”

If a matchup between Haney and Davis ever materializes, it would be a showdown between two completely different fighters. While Davis has shown off his boxing skills throughout his career, he’s mostly known for leaving his opponents comatose in the ring. On the other side of the equation, Devin Haney has developed into one of the sports pure boxers.

On May 29th, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this year, Devin Haney carefully dissected former multiple division titlist, Jorge Linares, to defend his WBC lightweight crown.

Considering Devin’s ability to box and move, Bill believes that his son could present the sort of problems to Davis that he’s yet to see in the ring. But while Bill is unquestionably backing his son in their possible future showdown, he does acknowledge that Davis packs the sort of punch that will leave Devin on his toes and alert at all times.

“I just know that stylistically, Devin presents some problems for Tank, just like Tank presents a great deal of dangerous power to Devin as well.”

For a number of years now, Ryan Garcia has called for a showdown against knockout artist, Gervonta Davis. The pair have traded words on social media on numerous occasions, with Garcia claiming that if he was granted a shot at the multiple division titlist, he’ll leave him concussed on the canvas.

Despite his verbal threats, a matchup between the pair has failed to materialize.

While the 23 year old claims that he would love nothing more than to get his hands on his long time rival, the former WBC interim lightweight titlist is coming to both a disappointing and disheartening conclusion.

“He’s not going to fight anybody outside of Mayweather promotions,” said Garcia during a self-recorded video. “That’s what Floyd [Mayweather] said.”

Garcia’s remarks, stem from the comments made by Floyd Mayweather, the promoter of Davis. Following his most recent win, an 11th round stoppage over Mario Barrios, Mayweather made it clear that fighters who were outside of his own promotional company, would essentially have no shot at fighting Davis, at least in the short term.

“We work smarter, not harder,” said Mayweather following yet another knockout win by Davis. “We keep everything in house. Mayweather Promotions, PBC, were all one family. We’re not about to go somewhere and make another company great. We have plenty of fighters at 140, 135 and 130.”

With Garcia closely aligned with Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, the young star believes that his chances of fighting Davis are essentially slim to none. Furthermore, with names such as Devin Haney, Teofimo Lopez, Shakur Stevenson and a long list of others currently under different promotional banners, Garcia is convinced that team Davis will use this as an opportunity to eschew from the rest of the competition.

“Gervonta is just never gonna fight I don’t think anybody that you want him to fight. He doesn’t want to fight anybody tough, it’s just not in his nature.”

Those thoughts, however, are simply erroneous according to Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. If Garcia continues to spread what he classifies as false pretenses, then Ellerbe has revealed that he will have no choice but to release proof of what really took place behind closed doors.

You know damn well I tried to make that fight and your promoter said you had other plans. Don’t have me put the doc out there and expose it. Stop playing.”

For the most part, Gervonta “Tank” Davis was praised for his efforts.

Recently, the hard-hitting Baltimore native had his “dare to be great” moment, when he moved up two weight divisions to take on Mario Barrios. The two squared off at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta Georgia on June 26th. While Davis struggled early with the size and length advantage of Barrios, he eventually found his money shot, flooring Barrios a total of three times before stopping him in the 11th round.

With the win, Davis stripped Barrios of his WBA “Regular” title. Although fans of Davis have sung his praises for the brazen move, Gary Russell Jr. believes there’s was nothing audacious about Davis facing Barrios.

“It was strategized and it almost f*cking backfired,” said Russell during an interview with Fight Hub TV. “Their cherry-picking. What I mean by that is, they picking the easiest task or the easiest fighter and fighting that person. They trying to trick and bamboozle the fans.”

Russell’s frustrations aren’t simply tied to Davis facing Barrios. Several months prior to their showdown, Davis stood across the ring from former multiple division champion, Leo Santa Cruz. Despite his credentials, Cruz was pegged as the heavy underdog.

Just as most predicted, Davis scored an early finish on the night, turning Cruz’s lights out in the sixth round. But while Davis may have picked up stoppage victories against both Barrios and Cruz, Russell believes he was in serious trouble before the sudden endings.

“With Barrios, he was f*cking losing. He was honestly beating Tank. Even when he was fighting Leo, he was losing that fight.”

Currently, Davis is pondering an important decision. The 26-year-old is in possession of the WBA “Regular” title at both 135 and 140 pounds. Just a few days ago, Davis opted to drop his 130-pound version of the belt, as the sanctioning body is attempting to end the proliferation of world titles. He’ll now be forced to choose between holding onto his championship status at either 135 or 140 pounds.

While Davis has given no indication of what he’ll choose to do, Russell Jr. believes that there’s simply no way he’ll stick around in the 140-pound division.

“I know for a fact he ain’t gonna stay his ass up there at 140. He ain’t gonna stay at 140, not with that performance.”

As of late, Gervonta Davis has had the propensity to move up in weight.

Earlier this year in late June, Davis opted to move up two weight divisions to take on a much larger man in Mario Barrios. Despite giving up several inches in height and reach, Davis had little to no trouble dealing with the Texas native, dropping him a total of three times before ultimately stopping him in the 11th.

With the win, Davis added the WBA 140 pound “Regular” title to his collection. Since then, rumors have surfaced of a possible showdown between the Baltimore native and former unified welterweight champion, Keith Thurman. In order for the two to lock horns, Davis would have to once again move up in weight.

While things are far from official, promoter of Davis and CEO of Mayweather Promotions in Leonard Ellerbe, has not only expressed a willingness to make their showdown a reality but he’s also supremely confident in the end result.

“I’d make that fight in two seconds,” said Ellerbe on his social media account when discussing a possible Thurman vs. Davis matchup. “Tank would knock him the f*ck out right now.”

Although Ellerbe has shown absolutely no hesitancy in what would ultimately take place between the pair, Calvin Ford, head trainer of Davis, was a bit more reluctant.

“I’m not as confident because you can’t sleep on Thurman,” said Ford during an interview with FightHype.com. “I’ve been knowing Thurman since the amateurs.”

Since unifying welterweight titles against Danny Garcia in March of 2017, Thurman has suffered several setbacks due to injury. Over a four-year span, Thurman has stepped into the ring only twice and in his most recent appearance in 2019, he suffered the first defeat of his career to Manny Pacquiao. The now 32-year-old was floored in the opening round but managed to rally back. Ultimately though, Thurman came up just short, losing via split decision.

With his record now blemished, Ford believes there’s a clear blueprint to defeat the former unified 147-pound titlist.

“I know how to get past him. In the words of Floyd Mayweather, you’ve been beat, so you know how to be beat.”
