Daniel Jacobs, like most fighters, hates answering questions about future opponents when one is already staring him square in the face.

The Brooklyn native currently has a date with journeymen Gabe Rosado on November 27th. The two have had their differences in the past and look to put an end to their rivalry once and for all. But while the former middleweight champ has one eye Rosado, he admitted that he has another eye on someone else.

“One hundred percent,” said Jacobs when asked if he wants to fight Jermall Charlo on the Ak and Barak show. “I’m not overlooking Gabe Rosado but I have my eyes on Jermall Charlo.”

Jacobs, 33, has always wanted to put his hands on Charlo, and during a heated confrontation a few years ago between the two, he nearly did.

Just a few weeks ago, the WBC middleweight titlist pitched a near shutout against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, a man Jacobs defeated as well. For most of the former belt holder’s career, both he and Charlo shared the same division. However, he’s since moved eight pounds north to the super middleweight division. He appeared comfortable at his new weight class, dishing out the beating of a lifetime to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in late 2019.

Squeezing back down to 160 pounds is both unlikely and unnecessary for the Brooklyn native. Why should he put his body through another grueling weight cut when a deal can be worked out to placate both sides.

“From hearing things, Charlo wants to move up. I don’t see why we can’t do it at 68 or just meet in the middle. I don’t want to take him out of his circumstances where he isn’t comfortable and vice versa.”

The championship landscape at 168 pounds is one filled with big names and huge fights. But when questioned about possibly facing anyone else, Jacobs (36-3, 30 KOs) simply paused before cracking a huge smile.

“I want to fight Charlo. I won’t even say anybody else name.”

Whether it’s a matchup with Charlo or a current titleholder at 168 pounds, all of those possibilities will fall by the wayside should Jacobs fall short against Rosado on November 27th.

A possible future fight against Charlo is sure to get the blood of fight fans pumping, something he can’t say about his matchup with Rosado. Despite that, the Brooklyn native is asking for his fans to be patient. The big fights will come the moment he takes care of business next month.

“Let me just get this little knucklehead out of the way. I know people aren’t to hype about this one but I know it’s going to be a competitive fight.”

Trash talking, more times than not, usually leads to fistfights. But in the sport of boxing, it rarely does.

Fighters have often gone back and forth both on social media and in person, only to wrap up their insults with “let’s make the fight happen,” before walking away with no actual intention of making said contest.

Yet, in the case of fringe contender Gabriel Rosado, it appears all of his trash talking has gotten him exactly what he wanted.

“Gabe talked his way into this fight,” said Daniel Jacobs in a press release. “Now it’s time to see if he can back it up.”

For years now, Rosado has had an issue with Jacob’s “corny,” image. He repeatedly called out the former two time middleweight world titlist and nearly came to blows with him when the two were face to face late last year.

For the most part, Jacobs treated the Philadelphia native like a nat. Shrugging him off whenever he came around and seldom giving him any attention. With that being said, Jacobs simply couldn’t ignore him anymore. And come November 27th, Rosado will have his undivided attention.

“He’s got a big mouth and he’s been bringing up my name constantly for over a year. But on Nov. 27 the talking stops and I can’t wait to shut him up.”

For Jacobs, the 32 year old has big plans following an up and down 2019. The first half of his year was spent in the spotlight as the boxing world was fixated on his middleweight contest against Canelo Alvarez. The Brooklyn native may have seen another loss added to his record and his title reign truncated, but his stock soared as he gave Alvarez one of the most competitive fights of his career.

The back half of his year was spent rebuilding his image and jumping back into the win column by pummeling Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Now, Jacobs intends on keeping up his newfound momentum when he takes on Rosado at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood Florida.

“My aim is to become a two-weight division world champion in 2021 and that starts with a big win in Florida. After that, I’m ready to step up and fight one of the World champions at 168 pounds.”

During a heated confrontation last year, former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs nearly came to blows with Gabriel Rosado. The fringe contender has long wanted to get his hands on Jacobs but the former belt holder simply laughed whenever a matchup between them was discussed.

“You will never step foot in the ring with me because you don’t deserve it,” said Jacobs to Rosado during their argument. “I get nothing out of fighting you.”

Fast forward one year later, and it appears Rosado will get his wish after all.

Both Jacobs and Rosado have come to terms for a showdown that will take place on November 27th on DAZN at 168 pounds. For as much as the Philadelphia native is thrilled to have a big profile fight, he was really last on the list for DAZN executives. Originally, the streaming company was hoping to match Jacobs with John Ryder, but once things fell through on that bout, they were forced to settle on Rosado.

For the 34 year old, he’s made a career out of facing the best of the best. And because of his willingness to do so, his record has suffered in a big way as his loss column continues to pile up. With four victories in his last 13 fights, wins are becoming extremely hard to come by for the Philadelphia native. With that being said, he did pick up a fairly dominant win in his last ring appearance against the unheralded Humberto Ochoa.

As for Jacobs, he’s made a career out of facing stiff competition as well, but seldom does he ever come up short in those moments. After coming out on the losing end against Gennadiy Golovkin in 2017, Jacobs strung together three straight victories. The latter resulting in the IBF middleweight championship.

His title reign was immediately truncated however, as he loss a close but clear decision at the hands of Canelo Alvarez at the half way mark of 2019. He’s since bounced back though, beating the living daylights out of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. to the tune of a fifth round stoppage win late last year.

Caleb Plant has always let his feelings be known about the Super Middleweight division. 

The IBF champion has taken shots at former belt holder Anthony Dirrell, calling him “old” and saying he “doesn’t have much left in the tank.” He’s dismissed the chances of WBA belt holder Callum Smith beating him. And Plant’s war of words with WBC titlist David Benavidez has also been in the news for the past few years. But now, Plant has his eyes set on another big name fighter. One who’s new to his division.

“He’s been beat,” said Plant when asked about his thoughts on former Middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs. “He’s been in some tough fights and I just don’t think that he’s an A class fighter. Not everyone is an A class fighter right now, but as they go through their career they continue to get better and better and they become an A class fighter. He’s not going to do that. He’s not on the way, he isn’t 25 or 27, he’s out man he’s had his chance.”

This unexpected beef between them started a few weeks ago when Jacobs was asked a question about who he believes is the best champion in his new weight class.

“To say who’s the best is kinda hard to say. But I would say, I mean, all those guys are top,” Jacobs said. “I would probably put Plant at the bottom of those names that you just named. I think Plant is good, but I think, you know, I think he can be beat. He’s beatable. I see a lot of flaws in his game.”

Most fighters tip toe into a division, Jacobs (36-3, 30 KOs) though, stomped his way through. 

The former Middleweight belt holder made it look easy against the perpetually underachieving Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on December 20th, 2020. Handing him an early Christmas present in the form of a fifth round one sided beating. 

Now that he’s gotten his feet wet, Jacobs is ready to jump right into the deep end. A matchup with Plant (20-0, 12 KOs) isn’t entirely likely but with COVID-19, forcing the sport of boxing into an expected tailspin, there is no telling what matchups we could be presented with when things resume. 

On paper, Jacobs has the advantage in roughly every category. Whether it’s strength of resume or just overall punching power, Jacobs has the edge. Something that Plant wouldn’t and couldn’t argue. But being called “beatable” by a fighter who already has three losses on his resume is something that Plant doesn’t want to hear come out of the mouth of Jacobs.

“He keeps saying how beatable I am but as of now I’m undefeated. You’re old, you’re on your way out.”

The options are seemingly endless for former Middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs. 

After a competitive loss to Canelo Alvarez in September of 2019, Jacobs ditched the 160 pound division and opted for comfortability at 168. The results so far have been exactly what he was hoping for as he stopped Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in the fifth round of their contest in December of 2019. 

Now that Jacobs has gotten his feet wet, he’s looking to jump into the deep end. But before he does, he is contemplating taking on a lesser name in the division. 

“As far as right now, it’s this little, little weasel that is in my little spine and that I can’t get out,” Jacobs told Hearn during an Instagram Live interview. “And his name is Gabe Rosado. He’s been annoying the hell out of me. Lord have mercy, this guy, man. So, I don’t know.”

For Rosado, he’s had himself a tough road over the past few years. You can easily make the argument that he’s fought the stiffest competition of just about anyone. Bouts with Alfredo Angulo, Gennadiy Golovkin, Peter Quillin, Jermell Charlo and Willie Monroe Jr proves that point. 

With no big name fighters looking in the direction of Rosado, mostly because of his 12 losses, he’s resorted to trash talk. During the past year, Rosado has called out Jacobs at every turn. It isn’t exactly surprising considering Rosado doesn’t seem to like anyone in or around his weight class. But his war of words has gotten the attention of Jacobs. 

Call it just business. That’s usually all it is. But Jacobs has other ideas.

“I just think it’s a little envy and it’s a little jealousy,” Jacobs said. “You know, I remember him saying something as far as when I was commentating, trying to say I’m trying to be a fake Andre Ward. But I’m a versatile man. I can do many things. You know, and I think that because he’s a gatekeeper. I think, you know, it doesn’t sit well with him because we all came up together. And for me to surpass him the way that I am and the way that his career has gone, he has to go other routes to get a fight.”

“And what fans don’t understand, you know, we all wanna do it for the fans, as far as picking the best fights. But sometimes there’s the personal fights that you wanna be able to get out. And it’s gonna make a good fight as well. So for me, I’m just looking at this fight, you know, like lamb chops right now, cuz he’s food.”

Daniel Jacobs seemed to be enjoying his brief time at his new division. After years of struggling to make the 160 pound limit, Jacobs made the call to move up eight pounds. The results so far have been pretty good. A fifth round stoppage win against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in his last ring appearance. 

Although it’s long been proven that Chavez Jr won’t live up to his father’s name, he is still a solid opponent. Jacobs made it look easy when the two faced off on December 20th, at the Talking Stick Resort Arena, in Phoenix Arizona. 

With Jacobs no longer having to worry about cutting any extra weight, he feels somewhat free in his new weight class. Still, that doesn’t mean things will be easy. 

At the moment, the 168 pound division is known as one of the best in all of boxing. With champions such as IBF belt holder Caleb Plant, WBC champion David Benavidez, WBA titlist Callum Smith and WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders, the path to another title won’t be easy for Jacobs. Yet, during a recent FaceTime interview with promoter Eddie Hearn, he did give his opinion on who he believes is the weak link out of that championship bunch.

With just 20 fights under his record, Plant would seem to have the least experience. But many peg him as the best boxer at 168. 

With boxers, along with most of the world, having absolutely nothing to do thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, it shouldn’t take long for Plant to hear what Jacobs feels about him. 

The former Middleweight champ doesn’t just have an eye on Plant though, but every single one of the champions. Including the one name he believes is better than the rest. 

“As far as Benavidez, he’s probably the strongest that I’ve seen amongst those guys that you just mentioned. But now that I’m coming up to the super middleweight division, it’s interesting. And now these guys have my attention. I’m gonna be studying, looking forward to what’s next, what’s best for me and my career.”
