Jermell Charlo Vs. Brian Castano Officially Lands In San Antonio Texas, At The AT&T Center

Jermell Charlo always dreamed of one day calling himself an undisputed world champion. What the unified super welterweight titlist didn’t know, however, was when and where it would happen. After locking up a date with WBO belt holder Brian Castano, for the final 154 pound title that he currently doesn’t have in his possession, Charlo patiently waited to hear an official fight date.

Now, after biding his time, Charlo (34-1, 18 KOs) couldn’t be happier with where his undisputed showdown has landed.

The AT&T Stadium in San Antonio Texas has officially been chosen as the site for Charlo vs. Castano’s contest on July 17th. Tickets to the event can be purchased now at www.attcenter.com.

Charlo, 31, figures to have a significant home crowd advantage as he was born less than two hours away in Richmond, Texas and currently resides roughly three hours away from San Antonio in Houston Texas.

After avenging the only loss of his career to Tony Harrison and regaining his WBC 154 pound title in December of 2019, Charlo picked up even more hardware in his very next outing. The pugnacious knockout artist made it look easy in his lone appearance in 2020 against former unified champion, Jeison Rosario.

With the opportunity to add two more world titles to his collection, Charlo wasted little time in dismantling his man at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Rosario would hit the deck three times before ultimately succumbing in the eighth round.

As for Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs), the Argentinian belt holder just recently claimed his championship status. In a February showdown earlier this year, Castano barely broke a sweat in defeating former titlist Patrick Teixeira for his WBO strap. Immediately following the win, Castano took aim at Charlo. It didn’t take long before both sides agreed to terms for their unification matchup. The winner will ultimately hold all four major world titles and will be the first undisputed world champion at 154 pounds since Winky Wright in 2004.

Brian Castano: “Charlo Is A Great Fighter, A Complete Fighter, My Next Fight I Want A Fight With Him”

Brian Castano’s name hasn’t even been engraved into his new WBO world title yet, but he is already lining up his next fight.

With a convincing win over former titlist Patrick Teixeira, Castano has a bevy of names to choose from. Some would result in difficult fights, while others, would allow him to fatten his bank account and milk his newly won title.

None of those options, however, would allow him to cement his name in boxing history. To achieve that, an undisputed showdown with unified champion Jermell Charlo is the only path he can take.

“Charlo is a great fighter,” said Castano during an interview with Fight Hub TV immediately following his victory. “Maybe he’s the strongest at 154 pounds. He’s a complete fighter. I want this fight. My next fight I want a fight with him.”

The recently placed target on the back of Charlo by Castano comes as no surprise. With the Houstonian knockout artist holding three Jr middleweight titles, he’s become everyone’s favorite fighter to call out.

Skipping to the front of the line in the normal world would ensue in a heated argument and fists would ultimately fly. In this case, however, the sea of 154-pound contenders might be forced to part to make way for Castano.

For the most, the Argentine native dominated Teixeira. His performance, paired with the one world title Charlo isn’t holding, could allow him to push ahead of his peers.

If that’s the case, Castano believes he’s more than ready to take full advantage. While he has a ton of respect for his skills, grit and determination – Castano is under the impression that Charlo had his moment in the sun already.

“This is my time. With Charlo, it’s going to be 50/50. He’s a great fighter but I am too. I’m ready.”

Brian Castano Picks Up WBO Title Against Patrick Teixeira

Brian Castano simply would not take no for an answer tonight. Standing in the way of his dreams of winning a world title was former WBO Jr middleweight titlist Patrick Teixeira at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Los Angeles California. But not even the hard hitting one time belt holder could keep him off.

Teixeira (31-2, 22 KOs) attempted to keep things simple. Meaning, box from the outside and keep the ubiquitous shots of his man at a minimum. With that being said, he found his game plan much easier said then done.

Round after round, shot after shot, Castano (17-0-1, 12 KOs) simply kept pushing forward and letting his hands go. By the time the final bell rang, his punches total came in over 1,100. Needless to say, his nonstop pressure and unique angles proved to be more than enough to pick up the WBO strap once wrapped around the waist of Teixeira.
