BoxingInsider returns for its fourth promotion in six months with Broadway Boxing, a card full of local and international talent to be streamed globally on DAZN. 

BoxingInsider is thrilled to once again work with Hall of Fame promoter Lou DiBella’s DiBella Entertainment to promote the latest installment of Broadway Boxing. Brooklyn’s Brian Ceballo (13-1, 7 KOs), a five-time New York Golden Gloves champion, will headline against Dominican Edward Ulloa Diaz in an eight-round super welterweight contest. In December 2020, Ceballo captured the WBO Inter-Continental welterweight belt. Ceballo will be looking to rebound from his lone defeat in his last fight on October 26, 2022.

The stacked undercard will feature Mongolian Olympian Tsendbaatar “Chinggis Khaan” Erdenebat,former women’s world champion Miyo Yoshida facing Indeya Smith, local boxers Sydney Maccow, Christian Otero, Ireland’s Larry Fryers, and David Lopez. They will all lace ‘em up on Thursday, April 27, at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, Manhattan.

The April 27 event is promoted by BoxingInsider Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.

Two-time Mongolian Olympian and 2018 Asian Games gold medalist Tsendbaatar “Chinggis Khaan” Erdenebat (5-0, 3 KOs) will compete in an eight-round super featherweight bout against Edy Valencia Mercado (20-9-6, 7 KOs). Tsendbaatar returns to Sony Hall following a third-round TKO win at the venue on February 23.

Former WBO Super Flyweight World Champion Miyo “Miyo Musashi” Yoshida (15-3) was born in Kagoshima, Japan, and now resides in New York, NY. Prior to becoming world champion in 2019, Miyo won the Japan Boxing Commission and Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation bantamweight titles. As world champion, Miyo made one successful defense, then lost the title by technical decision (stoppage due to gash over eye). She regained the belt in a rematch six months later. In her last fight, she lost the WBO title via split decision. 

Indeya Smith (6-6, 1 KO), from Dallas, TX, via New Orleans, LA, made her BoxingInsider Promotions debut on December 21, 2022, with an upset win versus Sulem Urbina, dominating the bout from the opening bell.

Sydney “The Jackal” Maccow (8-8, 3 KOs), born in Sint Maarten, Netherlands, now residing in Brooklyn, NY, is coming off of a five-fight streak of four wins sandwiched around a no contest. Christian “Veneno” Otero (4-3, 2 KOs), from New York, NY, made his pro debut on October 31, 2020, and his career began with four straight victories.

In one of the most exciting matches a club show could make, this bout features a real-life New York City grudge match between Church St. Boxing Gym trainer and boxer Maccow and fellow New Yorker Otero. The dislike here is real and born in the gym, as these two went to war in sparring. Edited footage showing a Maccow beatdown soon hit social media, which started a dispute that must be solved in the professional prize ring.

Joshua David “Pretty Boy” Rivera (8-2, 3 KOs), from La Mesa, CA, made his pro debut in 2018 and his first nine fights took place in Tijuana. His last bout, at Madison Square Garden on the Amanda Serrano-Erika Cruz undercard on February 4, was a unanimous decision loss against an undefeated Aaron Aponte.

Larry “Lethal” Fryers (11-6, 4 KOs) was born in Clones, Ireland, and now resides in Yonkers, NY. Fryers won 11 of his first 12 fights after making his pro debut in 2016. As an amateur, he was an Ireland Nationals U21 finalist and a U23 semi-finalist. “Lethal” has a large Irish following and is eyeing another chance at glory.

“Dynamite” David Lopez (2-0, 2 KOs), the 19-year-old super lightweight phenom from Las Vegas, NV, will compete in a four-rounder. In his last fight, Lopez needed just 87 seconds to stop Paul Walters Jr. on February 17 in Topeka, KS. Coming from a family of fighters, Lopez, who is of Black and Filipino heritage, is trained by his father and former boxer Kris Lopez.

Handsome, brash, and flashy, the lightweight southpaw Tyrone Everett was one of the hottest names to emerge during the fervent Philadelphia boxing scene of the 1970s. But his seemingly unstoppable ascent to superstardom came to an abrupt and gruesome halt on the morning of May 26, 1977, on the second floor bedroom of a row home on Federal Street in South Philadelphia. Only twenty-four years old, Everett was discovered dead with a bullet in his head delivered by his girlfriend, Carolyn McKendrick. On the kitchen table were thirty-nine sealed bags of heroin, primed for distribution. The lone witness to the shooting was a gay, cross-dressing drug dealer who, depending on the source, may have been caught in bed with Everett. McKendrick, who claimed she had been repeatedly abused by Everett, would end up serving a prison sentence, but for years the scuttlebutt on the streets of South Philadelphia suggested there were reasons to doubt the official story. 

Even for a sport as fundamentally wedded to the sad and sordid as boxing, the untimely death of Tyrone Everett stands out for its head-scratching irresolution and sorrow. In Murder on Federal Street, journalist and debut author Sean Nam sheds light on Everett’s grim last days, clearing up long-held misconceptions, raising new questions, and, along the way, offering revelatory information, including Everett’s entanglement with the Black Mafia, the harrowing criminal consortium that controlled the dope trade in South Philadelphia during the ’70s. 

Nam also parses one of the most infamous miscarriages inside the ring, one that continues to trigger heated debates among hard-core fans: the 1976 lightweight title fight at the Spectrum in Philadelphia between Everett and Alfredo Escalara that took place just six months before Everett’s death. Everett, to the eternal confoundment of the hometown crowd, lost by split decision. Nam shows how the shoddy proceedings of that night were almost certainly the result of a carefully deliberated frame-up. Indeed, whatever walk of life he was on, Everett was seemingly star-crossed at every turn. As award-winning writer Carlos Acevedo (Sporting Blood, The Duke) notes in an astute foreword to the book, Everett suffered from the “crooked overlap” between corruption in the streets and in boxing. 

Deeply researched and vividly reported, Murder on Federal Street weaves together racial politics, urban history, and sociology to situate Everett in the wider context of a tumultuous era, one marked by civil rights strife and economic depression. The book also takes pains to show how Everett measured up to his Philadelphian colleagues (Bennie Briscoe, Stanley “Kitten” Hayward, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts, Eugene “Cyclone”, et al.) in a bustling boxing culture now regarded as one the last great regional renaissances in American prizefighting. Boxing manager Dave McWater, Founder and CEO of Split T Management, is one of the few managers who actively supports USA Boxing and its Olympic style boxers.

“I first met Dave in 2016 and I was told he was a Professional Manager coming to our events to scout talent,” USA Boxing Executive Director Mike McAtee commented. “Over the last six-plus years I quickly learned Dave is the only Manager who regularly attends our events and actively supports perspective boxers, their coaches, and clubs.

“Dave understands that 99-percent of the boxers, coaches and officials who move into the professional ranks started in USA Boxing and/or are still part of USA Boxing, so he has helped support USA Boxing by sponsoring events or by financially supporting boxers and coaches attending events to compete at the highest level.  Simply, he is giving back to the sport of Olympic-style boxing where most managers, promoters and media take from our boxers, coaches, and officials.

While boxing promoters and most managers simply sign nearly finished amateur boxers who have developed through USA Boxing’s program, making no investment until after they turn pro, McWaters not only manages a few boxers before they sign pro contracts, he covers the cost of some boxers competing in tournaments, purchases tables and advertises at events, and advises his fighters whether they should remain amateurs or go pro.

“Some aren’t ready,” McWater said. “Their minds are so fertile at 16-17 that it’s a waste for them to fight pro bums at that age, when they could be gaining great experience against future greats in the amateurs. It stunts their growth. And definitely they should never turn pro in an Olympic year.”

Now allowed to sign amateur boxers to management contracts, Split T is arguably the largest and most successful manager in boxing, featuring a stable with more than 75 boxers, the majority of whom are products of USA Boxing.

Split T’s growing roster of gifted fighters includes USA Olympic Boxing Team members such as 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Oshae Jones, 2020 Olympian Tiger Johnson, and 2016 Olympian Charles Conwell, as well as former USA Boxing elite boxers Teofimo Lopez, who became Split T’s first unified world champion in the pro ranks, Khalil Coe, Otha Jones III, Javier Martinez, David Navarro, Diego Pacheco, Giovanni Marquez (son of 1992 US Olympian Raul Marquez), Trinidad Vargas, and many others.

“I have no proof, it’s just my theory,” McWater noted, “but I believe more fighters started going to gyms after the crash of 2008 (in which Team USA’s only medalist was Deontay Wilder’s bronze), when there were bad times. They (young boxers) looked toward Floyd (Mayweather, Jr.). We’ve seen much better USA boxers starting in 2016. There are less gyms, coaches, and facilities today, but numbers are up.  

“Medals speak for themselves. Shakur (Stevenson) won a gold medal in 2016 and Nico Hernandez got bronze. And Claressa (Shields) took gold in 2012 and 2016. In the Tokyo Olympics, Richard Torrez, Jr., Duke Ragan, and Keyshawn Davis all took home silver medals, Oshae Jones won  bronze. USA Boxing is on the right track!”

In 2013, McWater founded Split T Management in New York City, introducing boxing to analytics, and developing a comprehensive database of amateur boxers, which was passed on for professionals, including invaluable data that isn’t necessarily reported in newspapers or on boxing websites. Critical boxer evaluations for Split T in terms of signing fighters range from Olympians, of course, to major tournament medal accomplishments, down to winning their pro debuts for one of the top 5 promoters in the industry. There is a method to McWater’s boxing philosophy.   

“I grew up in the basketball world,” McWater explained, “which had a lot of tournaments. That’s why I attend as many of the top amateur boxing tournaments each year, especially the USA Boxing Nationals and National Golden Gloves.  Most mock it (use of analytics). I have great respect for scouts, but my work has a place. I watch 1000 fights a year.

“It’s a different world today, not conducive to building stars, because some promoters have exclusive network deals to provide television content. We sign who we believe in (based on the aforementioned criteria) because we are worried about injuries, crime, and drugs. We rarely sign a client we don’t like. Boxers are a lot brighter than people think.. Just because a lot are uneducated, they are extremely intelligent for their education level. Boxers are smarter athletes and I’ve worked with basketball and baseball players.”

McWater is especially proud of the female division of Split T, which is under the direction of Associate Manager Brian Cohen, featuring nine past or present world champions. “Brian should be Manager of the Year,” McWater offered. “He won’t because it’s women’s boxing, but five of our female fighters won world titles in 2022.”

Split T Management handles a variety of responsibilities for its clients, including contract negotiations, public and media relations, training guidance, legal services, branding, community relations and Nutrition Assistance. It also has the largest full time employee team in the United States: McWater and Cohen, Chief Operations Officer Ron Rizzo, Director of Boxing Operations Joe Quiambao, Associate Manager Brendan Segales, Associate Manager (female boxers) Cohen, and Social Media Manager Ryan Rechten.

USA Boxing and McWater, like all supporters and fans of Olympic style boxing, are concerned with boxing’s potential absence at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It is not currently part of sports programming then, because of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concern with the International Boxing Association (IBA) acting in the best interest of the boxing community.

“We all know about the IBA’s scandals,” McWater added, “but nobody really believes boxing will be dropped in the Olympics. At the least, it would diminish boxing. I’m glad USA Boxing is standing up to the IBA.”

Boxing in America needs more supportive managers like Dave McWater and Split T Management.

Former world champion Heather “The Heat” Hardy will take another step to become a contender once again when she battles former Brazilian champion Taynna Cardoso on February 23 at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, mid-town Manhattan.

Hardy vs. Cardoso, an eight-round super featherweight bout, is the main event of the show promoted by Boxing Insider in association with DiBella Entertainment.

Heather Hardy (23-2, 4 KO’s), Brooklyn born and raised and former World Boxing Organization Featherweight Champion, will bring “The Heat” once again after headlining Boxing Insider’s promotional debut on October 13.  Heather is a graduate of John Jay College in Brooklyn, began boxing in the gym at age twenty-four and made her professional debut in 2012 at the tender age of twenty-eight. In 2014 she won the vacant WBC International super bantamweight title and in 2016 won the WBC International featherweight title. On October 27, 2018, Heather became world champion, winning the WBO featherweight title with a unanimous decision win over Shelly Vincent at Madison Square Garden. Heather lost the title the following September in a unified title fight to WBC World Champion Amanda Serrano in a clash of women boxing stars. Most recently, Heather won a unanimous decision against Calista Silgado on October 22. Taynnaa Cardoso (5-1, 1KO) from Jundiai, Sao Paulo, Brazil made her pro debut in 2017 and won the Brazilian featherweight title in just her second fight.

Juan Carrillo (9-0, 7 KOs) from Barranquilla, Colombia is on a five-fight streak of those not going the distance. Juan made his pro debut on May 17, 2019 and won the World Boxing Association Fedecentro light heavyweight title on March 12, 2021 with a third-round stoppage. 

Akhiem Nurse (10-0, 9 KOs), from Plainfield, NJ, boasts a streak of nine stoppages, all coming after his only fight that went the distance, his 2018 pro debut. Since then his fights have ended in rounds 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 1, 4 and most recently round 3, on November 12, while winning the American Boxing Federation Intercontinental Americas super middleweight title. In this battle of light heavyweight bangers, someone’s 0 has got to go!

Frederic “French Revolution” Julan (12-2, 10 KOs) was born in Paris and now resides in Brooklyn. He made his pro debut in 2016 and won his first ten bouts. Julan is looking to rebound from two tough decision losses, most recently at Madison Square Garden. Decarlo “3medno” Perez (19-7, 6 KOs), from Atlantic City, is a former USA New Jersey State Super Middleweight Champion and a Jersey Shore fan favorite.  His last fight was a tough, majority decision loss to Nadim Salloum at Sony Hall in December.

Elon “El Leon” de Jesus (4-1, 3 KOs) from Dunkirk, NY, made his professional debut on December 18, 2020.  Elon will fight in a six-round bantamweight bout against Juan Pablo Meza (6-2, 1 KO) from Conchali, Chile, made his professional debut in 2018 and will be fighting as a pro for the first time outside his home country.

Michael Hughes (3-1, 1 KO) from New York, New York, Hell’s Kitchen born and raised, former NYC Golden Gloves Champion, is head trainer and trains at the famed Church Street Gym, will battle Nelson Morales (3-2).  The Dominican Morales now resides in Scranton, PA.

Tsendbaatar Erdenebat (4-0, 2 KOs) from Tsetserleg, Momgolia made his pro debut in 2018 and will be fighting in the USA for the first time against Cristian Oliveres (10-0, 5 KOs) from Santiago de Chile, Chile. Oliveras has been fighting professionally since 2014 and won the Chilean lightweight title in 2019.

 USA Boxing, Metro (“Metro”) continued the 2023 Ring Masters Championships: Road to the Garden in the city of New Rochelle courtesy of the Champs Boxing Club and the Boys & Girls Club.

Boxing fans experienced some of the best amateur grassroots-level boxing in the Senior Novice Male 147lbs & 165lbs divisions who competed in front of a capacity crowd at the Boys & Girls Club.  Attached is the bout sheet with results and outstanding performances qualifying for accolades from our participating sponsors.

President Ray Cuadrado and Vice President Sonya Lamonakis agreed that this tournament has captured the heart and soul of the boxing community in the Metropolitan area.  “The combination of the finals at Madison Square Garden and the allure of being a qualifier to the National Golden Gloves as Metro’s Premier Tournament has embedded in the collective psyche of boxing fans.  Tonight I saw boxing fans come out that haven’t been at a USA Boxing event since 2012,” said Sonya. Tournament proceeds will help send Elite Division champions to the National Golden Gloves in Pennsylvania this May.

Ring Masters Championships: The Road To The Garden 2023, after 3 registration checkins  Metro athletes, coaches, officials, doctors and especially fans are ready for an exciting season. This year there are 14 events scheduled before the finals. Young athletes with a dream to box at Madison Square Garden in April will punch their way to the finals. What’s exciting this year is The National Golden Gloves Tournament will serve as an Olympic Qualifier for USA Boxing. Athletes that win the Nationals in May will have the chance to qualify for the Olympics. Our Elite athletes that win Ring Masters will qualify for the National Golden Gloves in PA. 

The weights being contested this year are: Men 112, 125, 132, 139, 147, 156, 165, 176, 203-, 203+Women 110, 119, 125, 132, 139, 146, 154, 165, 178, 178+

This year’s opener is at Starrett City Boxing inside Brooklyn Sports Club in Brooklyn, NY. Metro is happy to bring events back to the grassroots clubs where the boxers come from. Hardy To Honor Former Trainer Hector Roca  In Return to the Scene of Her Most Recent Victory On Card Featuring a Wealth of New York Area Fighters

January 30, 2023, New York, New York – – Former world champion Heather “The Heat” Hardy will battle former Brazilian champion Taynna Cardoso in a eight-round super featherweight bout in the main event at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, mid-town Manhattan, on Thursday, February 23.

Women’s boxing star and former world title challenger Sulem Urbina (13-2-1, 2 KOs) will take her talents to New York for the first time in her career. This Wednesday, December 21, Sulem will be featured in a super flyweight bout scheduled for eight rounds against Indeya Smith, at Sony Hall, in the heart of Times Square, Manhattan.

“Sulem Urbina is not only a good fighter and championship contender, she’s one of the best people in boxing,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “She’s a great ambassador for women in the sport, using her social media and developing brand to elevate boxing and other fighters. She deserves to be treated like an ‘A-side’ fighter. I’m happy that Larry agreed with me and that she’ll be on the terrific Boxing Insider show on Wednesday.”

The Bronx’s undefeated Andy Dominguez will be the main event fighter for the first time in his young career in a fight card tabbed “Holiday Fight Night.” Also on the card will be Nadim Salloum, the first and only professional boxer born and raised in Lebanon, former WBA Intercontinental super middleweight champion Anthony Sims Jr., and undefeated Argentinian Alejandro Luis Silva.

This will be Boxing Insider Promotions’ second fight card. Their first, on October 13, also at Sony Hall, had a raucous standing-room-only crowd.

Born in Mexico now living in Phoenix, AZ, Urbina began her boxing life fighting at the Oxnard PAL as an amateur. She turned pro in 2016 and won her first 12 bouts (with one no contest mixed in). Her first loss, on October 30, 2020, came on points against Marlen Esparza, who is now the unified WBC/WBA flyweight world champion. On July 9, 2021, Sulem fought WBA flyweight champion Naoko Fujioka and lost a majority decision. 

Andy Dominguez (8-0, 6 KOs) from The Bronx and born in Mexico, knocked out his last opponent in the first round in front of many of his family and friends. It was Andy’s fourth knockout win in a row. Andy turned pro in August 2020, in a bubble event during the pandemic peak. On Wednesday, Dominguez will face Nicaraguan Marvin Solano (24-7, 8 KOs) in an eight-round flyweight bout.

Nadim Salloum (9-1, 4 KOs) is the first and only professional boxer to be born and raised in Lebanon. Nadim now resides in Brooklyn and has a passionate following. The Lebanese faithful’s fandom did not go unnoticed at Nadim’s last fight on October 13 at Sony Hall. On Wednesday, Nadim will battle Decarlo Perez (19-6, 6 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight bout.

Every time I go back home, I do an event just talking and showing them videos explaining to them how boxing really works and share my story at the same time – what happens behind the scenes for a Lebanese boxer. Last summer we gathered around 60 people and taught them more about the sport. Next summer I plan to do a training camp for kids in need with a Lebanese American NGO as well so keep them out of streets through boxing.

Boxing Insider is diving into the promotional waters, and they are doing it in style at Sony Hall in Times Square.

Boxing Insider’s “New Beginnings” captures the spirit of the “club show” which has long been the lifeblood of the sport. It features local favorites with roots in the community, along with international stars who have transplanted themselves into the Greater New York area. 

A former world champion and three other world-ranked competitors will be present and accounted for in the ring. 

Much of the attention will surround Brooklyn-born Heather Hardy (22-2, 4 KO’s), who brings “The Heat” back after 17 months of inactivity, as she mounts another run at a world championship. Hardy was the World Boxing Organization Female world featherweight champion until she lost a decision (which was also contested for the World Boxing Council interim featherweight title) to Amanda Serrano, who was last seen lighting up Madison Square Garden in an epic fight against Katie Taylor.

In a co-feature, Ivan Golub, a native of the Ukraine who currently resides in Brooklyn, will put his USBA welterweight title on the line.

Fans at Sony Hall will also get a chance to see Andy Dominguez (7-0, 5 KO’s) of the Bronx, a dynamic flyweight who currently holds the World Boxing Association Fedecentro title, which he puts on the line. At 24 years of age, he is already 14th in the world in the WBA rankings.   

The unpredictable Nadim Salloum (10-1, 3 KO’s), the first pro fighter born and raised in Lebanon, will be seen in a six-round super middleweight bout. Salloum, who now lives in Brooklyn, has a large and vocal following among his countrymen in the New York City area. 

Another light heavyweight on the card is Orville Crooks (3-0, 2 KO’s), one of best amateurs New York has produced in recent years. Crooks, who hails from the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, is both a U.S. Amateur champion and a National Golden Gloves champion. For him, the sky is truly the limit. 

Just added to the fight card, Petros Ananyan takes on Paulo Cesar Galdino in an 8 round welterweight contest.

Integrated Sports will distribute the exhibition match between International Boxing Hall of Famer and former 5-division world champion Floyd Mayweather and Japanese 2-time mixed-martial-arts champion Mikuru Askakura on September 24^th, starting at 11 p.m. ET, live on pay per view from Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

The Mayweather-Askakura boxing exhibition headlines Super RIZIN, presented by Japanese MMA company RIZIN Fighting Federation, which will also feature a kickboxing match between Yoshinari Nadaka and So Trakunbet Bandasak.

The event will be distributed by Integrated Sports across North America live on Cable and Satellite Pay Per View via iN Demand, DIRECTV, DISH, Shaw PPV, Rogers, Bell TV, and SaskTel priced at $29.99. Additionally, it will be broadcast via Digital PPV on FITE (all FITE mobile, OTT Streaming and Smart TV apps) and PPV.com.

Mayweather- Askakura is scheduled for 3 rounds. The 45-year-old Mayweather, who retired from professional boxing with a perfect 50-0 record, fights out of Las Vegas. This will mark the first boxing match for Asakur, 30, who has a 16-3-0 MMA record.
