How To Select The Right Personal Trainer

Posted on 03/27/2011

A personal fitness trainer is a great investment for anyone looking to lose weight, change their eating habits and get into shape. However, finding the right personal trainer can sometimes be challenging. You want someone who is experienced, reliable, affordable and trustworthy. When you work with a personal trainer, you are literally investing in your health and fitness. As with most investments, you will want to see a positive return for the money spent. That’s why finding the right personal trainer is so important. In order to get the most of your investment, you need to find someone who understands your fitness goals and delivers a workout regiment that is individual tailored to fit your needs. Use the following guidelines to help you select the right personal trainer for you:

1. Ask for recommendations. Before you start searching on the Internet for the next Jillian Michaels, talk with your friends and family. If one of them has used a personal trainer in the past, ask for their contact information. Personal trainers that come highly recommended by family and friends are worth investigating. If you can’t find any recommendations, then start searching online for local trainers in your area.

2. Ask about certification. Once you have the name of a personal trainer, you should always evaluate his or her certification. This will give you a good idea of their level of professionalism and how long they have been training. Always make sure that they are certified through a reputable fitness and training organization, and can produce the necessary documentation.

3. Ask about experience. Most personal trainers have a general knowledge of overall fitness, yet they also specialize in certain specific areas. Find out which area they have the most experience in and decide if it matches with your personal fitness goals. For example, if you are interested in building muscle then it’s important to work with a fitness expert who is experienced in that particular area of fitness. Otherwise, you will both be wasting your time.

4. Do you like their personality? Always make sure that you get along well with your personal trainer and that your personalities match. If you need someone who can motivate you with words, then don’t hire a personal trainer who doesn’t like to talk a lot. It’s also a good idea to find someone you feel comfortable talking to your personal trainer on an intimate level. You will be spending a good amount of time with your personal trainer, so you want someone you can open up to and express yourself with (especially when the going gets tough).

5. Can you afford it? Lastly, make sure you can afford the services of a personal trainer. Some personal trainers charge more per hour than others, based on experience and clientele. When deciding on which personal trainer you would like to work with, always consider the financial obligation. Remember, hiring a personal trainer is an investment. How much are you willing to invest?
