Obesity Problems And How You Can Prevent Them

Posted on 04/02/2011

In the United States, we live by the creed that “bigger is better.” We want the bigger television, the bigger house and the bigger car. But when it comes to our waistlines, bigger is definitely not better. Our gluttonous attitude has led to not only bigger television sets, but also to bigger portions on our dinner plates. As a result, the American popular has grown right along with our “bigger is better” philosophy. The obesity epidemic is running rampant in this country, and more and more individuals die of obesity-related causes every year. In fact, obesity is now one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. It’s preventable, because you have the ability to do something about it before it gets too late.

Obesity causes a variety of health problems, including type II diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary disease, sleep apnea and stroke. These health problems are hard to heal if you don’t not take proper action and get fit. Unfortunately far too many individuals don’t even notice that they are gaining weight at a rapid pace until they are obese. Suddenly, they look at themselves in the mirror and they don’t even recognize their reflection. This can be a devastating realization. But you don’t have to wait until it gets to that point. You can take action now. The following tips will help you prevent obesity and live a longer and healthier life.

Get an annual check-up. Many of us put off going to the doctor for an annual check-up, which can often be helpful in maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Your doctor will let you know right away if you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, and if you are gaining weight. You can then discuss health options for addressing these issues, which helps prevent the onset of obesity. Talking to your doctor is one of the best defenses to obesity related issues.

Don’t put off exercising. Some individuals prefer the “I-will-do-it-tomorrow” approach. But putting off exercising only increases your chances of obesity. Don’t wait to start getting fit, because you might get to a point where it is too late. Start getting fit today, even if you can only take a walk around the block. Once you get your body moving, it will respond accordingly. You may even find that you enjoy walking, and the next day you will walk even further. Exercising is a key factor, so find something that you truly enjoy doing. When you find something that you enjoy doing, you will be more likely to stick with it.

Make healthier eating choices. Even the slightest changes in your daily eating habits can prove to be effective. If you are eating out three to four times per week, try cutting it down to one or two times per week instead. You’d be surprised at what a difference this can make. It’s also helpful to learn about proper nutrition, so that you have the knowledge you need to make healthier eating choices. Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to obesity prevention.
