Interview with "Lil Evil," Jens Pulver – Part II
Reported By: Boxing Insider - 02.16.2004 02:55 AM
By Chris Colderley
In the second part of the interview with Chris Colderley, Jens Pulver talks about his evolution as a father and a fighter. He also gives his take on “Dirty Boxing,” a strategy he first talked about as an announcer for the UFC.
BoxingInsider.com: How do you go about getting your mental state back -- getting mentally in shape -- after a loss?
Jens Pulver: After a loss, you just have to take what happens. You can either let it break you or you can let it make you a better person and a stronger person. I feel that I've done that. I've stepped back and realized I can either stay down here at the bottom or I can work my way back up to the top. That's what I'm best at. I'm best at working my way back up to the top. When I get to the top I struggle, and when I'm at the bottom I struggle, but I'm shining when I'm working my way up.
You can let the fight make you or you can let it break you. You can let it take your spirit or you can let your spirit shine through and let people know how strong you really are. That's what happened. I seriously had to take stock and look around. Since then, Mom and I have grown at parenting and have gotten on a better schedule. Now, I'm starting to take seriously good care of myself again.
Before my child was born, it was all about me: I was hungry, I was wild, and I was ready to go. Then, when my child was born, it really knocked me off my pedestal and took me for a loop. I was struggling. It's almost like I became human again. I hadn't been there for a long time -- I never thought about being human -- I just wanted to wreck shop and be a dominant force in the world. And when a little girl came, I just wanted to be a good dad. I think that's from my past. You can read in my book -- the past caught up to me. That wish to be a really good father took over. I never wanted to be the dad that I had. That became my top priority and everything else became secondary -- and my fights showed that.
BoxingInsider.com: Well, that's not a bad thing.
I know you have your website -- just remind the fans what it is?
Jens Pulver: www.jenspulver.com -- click on the Lil' Evil on the front and hop in. I've been meeting and talking to a lot more people in the forums. (My forums are getting a lot bigger.) People are getting on there and writing to me, and I write back to them. Everyday I get on there and reply to as many postings as I can. It's been a lot of fun. I'm getting a new webmaster to help me out -- to make it easier to use and to help me to try and control the web more. It's definitely going to go under construction again pretty soon and it's going to come up better. Hopefully, the site will be a lot more fun and easier for people to talk to me.
BoxingInsider.com: The other thing I was going to ask you about -- I notice you have a set of instructional tapes out. Number one is "Dirty Boxing". Can you give us a brief rundown of Jens Pulver's "Dirty Boxing"?
Jens Pulver: "Dirty Boxing" is something that Jeremy and I came up with. It's all those little things that some boxers will do -- underhook, grabbing the back of your head, turning your elbow – it’s all those little things that aren't really legal in boxing. If we used those tactics in boxing, we'd be called "dirty boxers". And that's all it is. Watching Randy Couture defeat Vitor Belfort the first time, is when I really started working on perfecting my technique because I knew I was going to end up there. It's basically controlling that clinch and getting where you can land your shots and do different takedowns. It's all kinds of little things. And that's where a lot of fights are won and lost -- especially when there's a lot of clinching involved because in our sport there is a lot of clinching involved.
The "Dirty Boxing" tape … everybody can work on boxing, everybody can work on grappling, but the dirty boxing is a transition in between the two. It's something that I focused on a long time ago and I know it helps me. It's something that people can work on. You stay in close on a guy who has a powerful kick and that's how you control him and take him down. Your hands are on him, you can see what they're doing.
BoxingInsider.com: And if people want to order your book or the videotapes, how should they do that?
Jens Pulver: Right now you can go to Amazon.com to order the book and www.panthervideostore.com to order the tape. As soon as I get this website re-done, there'll be clothes, the book, and the tapes -- all on my website. People can order them from me.
BoxingInsider.com: Good. Are there any other things we should know about?
Jens Pulver: Other than that I'm just getting ready to go out to Jeremy Horn's and do his thing tonight, at tonight's show in Cincinnati. We're going to go and watch that. And the new gym is getting opened -- it's opening really soon -- Pat Miletich's new gym.
I'm doing well, I'm happy. I'm getting happy, anyway. I know a lot of people keep asking when I'm coming back to the UFC and if you have an answer, you need to get hold of Dana and let him know. I want all my fans to know that I'm pushing really hard to get back there and, no matter what I did, I'm going to keep fighting. If anybody ever needs to talk to me, you can always get a hold of me at jenspulver.com and I'll always write back.
