New Interview with UFC King Randy Couture
Reported By: Boxing Insider - 10.27.2003 02:07 AM
Boxinginsider.com: Hey, Champ how is it going? We wanted to ask you how your show went last week?
Randy Couture: [The show went] very well. We sold out. We had about 500 people there and the fights were very good. There was only one mismatch. It's so hard to tell sometimes with the amateur fighters what their skill level is. Trying to match them up with guys who are close to their skill level and get them good fights can be difficult. Matt Lindland did a great job and the card went well.
Boxinginsider.com: When is your next show scheduled?
Randy Couture: I think it's going to be in January, but we haven't set the date yet. We still have a couple of things we need to work out before we finalize the date and pick our venue.

Boxinginsider.com: Well, you've now been the undisputed champion for a few weeks -- it's all settled in -- how do you feel? How's your training keeping up? How have things changed for you in the last few weeks?
Randy Couture: Well, things haven't really changed at all. Training has been going well. I've been working with Matt and Evan to get them ready for their fights for the November 21st show. I am just training once a day -- getting a little chance to recover. Actually I'm in Colorado to hunt for the next seven days so I'm getting a little break from the normal grind.
Boxinginsider.com: The Undertaker commented about you: "The World's Baddest Dude" and now you have a Gun? That's a little scary...
Randy Couture: (laughing) Well, yeah, but they're purely for sport.
Boxinginsider.com: Of course! You're keeping in tip-top shape, you're not...
Randy Couture: No, I can't afford to take much time off. I had a few days off after the fight. I went in and did some light workouts. I did some coaching with the other guys, but the Sunday following the fight I started training again.
Boxinginsider.com: What are your plans for the next few months? Are you just going to be training Matt for the next UFC and recovering?Randy Couture: Yeah. That's right. Basically, I just will work on some new skills and help with Matt and Evan with their game plans and their conditioning.
Boxinginsider.com: Evan Tanner, right?
Randy Couture: That's right.
Boxinginsider.com: Have you done any mainstream interviews or any interesting media since the fight?
Randy Couture: There have been a lot of interviews. I received a lot more attention after this fight than most fights -- but nothing that sticks out, nothing too terribly out-of-the-norm.
Boxinginsider.com: I'm sure your interview with BoxingInsider sticks out the most, right?
Randy Couture: (laughing) Of course!
Boxinginsider.com: How's Matt Lindland's training going for the fight?
Randy Couture: Matt and Evan both look very good. They're really starting to come on now. They've got about six weeks, and their conditioning is good. I put Matt through a conditioning workout this morning at eight in the morning and he looks great.
Boxinginsider.com: Have you gotten Matt on Light Force supplements yet?
Randy Couture: He's been taking them for a while now. He likes them. He's somewhat of a Diet Coke/chewing tobacco kind of a guy so the Light Force is a real step up for him.
Boxinginsider.com: How are you doing with the program?
Randy Couture: I love it. I take the supplements three times a day, religiously. I think the supplements are really good.
Boxinginsider.com: I guess I have to ask you about your thoughts on Tim Sylvia? What were your first thoughts on him testing positive for steroids?
Randy Couture: Well, it's unfortunate. I think it was a stupid mistake. Tim's a young guy. I talked to him on the phone. I called him after I heard and he called me today after his hearing. I think he approached it the right way. He stepped up and said "I made a mistake," apologized, showed remorse and gave up his title. He's still a young guy. I think he'll clean up and he won't make that mistake again. He?l be back.
Boxinginsider.com: Have you talked to Tito since the fight?
Randy Couture: No I haven't.
Boxinginsider.com: There's talk of him fighting Chuck and the winner fighting you -- is that the way you see the light heavyweight division shaping up in the next few months?
Randy Couture: I think, certainly, if Chuck beats Vanderlei [Silva] and wins the Grand Prix, then the logical step is to have a rematch with him. If he doesn't win, then I think it would be more logical for him and Tito to fight, and Belfort and Franklin to fight to see who's going to be the number one contender to fight again in January or February.
Boxinginsider.com: As always, Randy, I appreciate your taking time out of your day to talk to us. I wish you the best of luck and I'll be in touch soon.
