My thought's on UFC 44: Undisputed By Ken Shamrock
Overall, I thought the fights were really well matched. Joe Silva did a great job again! Of course, Dana White also did an excellent job of putting the show together.
I thought that Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz was a spectacular fight.
A well conditioned Randy Couture showed people that age doesn't matter as long as you have a strong will, a focused mind, and a big heart. This was a great showing for Randy Couture and a very poor showing for Tito Ortiz.
The Tim Sylvia - Gan McGee fight
It didn't take long for the Tim Sylvia - Gan McGee fight to unfold. With two enormous men in there, it was bound to be a sluggish fight. Tim Sylvia just caught him on the chin with a straight punch that buckled McGee. To Tim Sylvia’s credit, he jumped on him quickly and finished the fight.
It's hard to tell what’s next for Gan McGee because the heavyweight division is pretty weak right now. The only think I can envision is Ricco Rodriguez fighting Gan McGee for another chance at Tim Sylvia.
As for Tim Sylvia, I don't know. Who is there out there? Maybe the UFC can grab somebody from Pride to fight him because the state of the UFC Heavyweight Division is weak. I am sure there is talent out there. In fact, I have seen some out there in Frank Mir. He will be facing Sylvia at the next event, but I would have liked to have seen him rematch Wes Sims who stomped him on the head. Even though Sims was disqualified, he’s young and made a mistake. I thought that would have been good build up to a championship fight. To throw Frank Mir in there against Tim Sylvia, that's a big step! In some respects Sylvia is similar to Wes Sims, but Mir cannot expect that same kind of disqualification with Sylvia.
How does Tim Sylvia Represent the UFC?
Tim Sylvia is in a similar position to Ricco Rodriguez when had the belt. Now, he has defended his belt, but how many times does he have to defend it to become recognized as a superstar. I think, as he keeps defending his belt every time, he will become a bigger star each time. He was very impressive against McGee, but you have to keep facing high caliber of fighters. Tim Sylvia stands above all of them right now, but he hasn't really been tested yet.
The Randy Couture – Tito Ortiz Fight
When I heard that this match was being put together, I really was hoping that Tito would pull it out because I wanted to be the one to beat him. It would have been nice to have stepped in there, after he had beaten Randy, and beat him. Having said that I like Randy - he's a good person, and I think he is great for the sport. For that fight to end the way that it did was the best thing for the UFC.
The outcome of the fight doesn't matter much, if I can get in there and maybe put a spanking on Tito myself. Maybe I can fight one and then the other!
When Randy went into this fight, I thought he had a very good chance of beating Tito. He is a solid wrestler and has the same style that Tito Ortiz does - take him down, ground him, and pound him. Randy has more experience in wrestling because he’s been at the collegiate wrestling level and, he's been a world champion. He's just a great wrestler. Before the fight, I thought the match up just wasn't very good for Tito. Not to mention that Randy's conditioning at age 40 is outstanding. In fact, it is the best I have ever seen. I think he is probably the best guy out there right now to represent the UFC.
In contrast to heavyweight division, the light heavyweight division is very strong. I haven't seen a division this strong ever.
Final Thoughts
The entire card was good. The under card had some great young kids, but I would have liked to see more familiar faces in the middleweight and lightweight divisions. I haven't seen many of those fighters before. It’s OK to have a young faces in the octagon, but I thought the under card had way too many new fighters.
