Talkin’ Boxing with Yoel Judah

Father and trainer of undisputed welterweight king Zab Judah - Yoel Judah recently talked some boxing with Boxinginsider:

Boxinginsider.com: How impressed were you by your son Zab’s spectacular win in St. Louis?

Yoel Judah: “It was one of the most critical important fights of our life. I mean, if we couldn’t beat Spinks…we needed that win to put us in the next era. Spinks was a guy that Zab played around with in the first fight. He shouldn’t have played with him. It went to the decision, he lost. I thought, personally, like a lot of people, it should have been a draw. But this time we had to show ‘em that, yo, Spinks is not in our league. So we had to shut him down.”

Boxinginsider.com: What was the difference? Why was Zab finally able to put it all together and do it? What was the missing ingredient?

Yoel Judah: “He was serious. Stop playing. Let me tell you something. If Zab is serious and don’t play nobody is gonna beat him. He can hold those belts as long as he want to…Oscar de la hoya, Shane Mosley, whoever, Floyd come up, Cotto, Kostya Tszyu - which we want him. Again. One more time. Any of them come, we’re gonna break ‘em up. Zab is strong at that weight. He’s saturated. And yo, he’s not playin’. That’s the big thing. Zab’s two losses were that he played. But if he’s dead serious, you’re not gonna beat him.”

Boxinginsider.com: When did you first see when Zab was a kid that he had superstar potential?

Yoel Judah: “From the time he was born [laughs]. I know, I was…I mean, I was a fast kid, three-time world champion, seven degree blackbelt, yo, I put it in my son and watched him a couple times and it’s just that he developed. .He always had the speed, he always was a fast kid, he always had good footwork, all that. It was always just him growing into his own, like he is now.”

Boxinginsider.com: How do you see Klitschko-Rahman playing out?

Yoel Judah: “I say Rahman’s got a 100% puncher’s chance. Klitschko don’t really…I mean, good mover, good jabber, but if Rahman comes to fight he’ll knock Klitschko out.”

Boxinginsider.com: Hopkins vs. Taylor?

Yoel Judah: “Well I say if Jermain don’t get him early, Hopkins wins. (Why?) All his experience. If Jermain gets him, he gotta get him early. He is fighting the best in the world. Bernard’s my man, yo, he’s a seasoned veteran, he knows the ring in and out. Jermain’s gotta attack him early. I think Jermain gots the speed to really put it on Bernard, to get him. But the longer it goes, the better it is for Hopkins.”

Boxinginsider.com: Golota vs. Brewster?

Yoel Judah: “This is Golota’s third title shot for the title I think. Golota gonna go all out for the title. Brewster’s a slick fighter. He’s a puncher. To me, that’s any man’s fight. Whoever wants it. Whoever wants that one has to get it. Cause Brewster’s not gonna let that belt go. And Golota wants it. So that’s up in the air to me. Good fight.”

Boxinginsider.com: Winky vs. Tito?

Yoel Judah: “Winky Wright’s got a very good chance early. Early. Trinidad’s a slow starter. To me, the fight going past six rounds is all Trinidad. Winky Wright’s gotta get it in the first six rounds - hurt him, drop him, do something. If he don’t, Trinidad’s gonna get him. That’s how I look at it.”
