Talkin Boxing with Wayne Braithwaite

He’s one of the best-kept secrets in boxing. Wayne “Big Truck” Braithwaite can do it all - box, punch, flow with fluidity, fight comfortably from the conventional or southpaw stance. And he can do it with eye-catching style and athleticism. Many boxing fans don’t know much about Wayne Braithwaite, but trust me, the hardcore boxing insiders do. And though Wayne has not yet attained superstar status in boxing, his style and potential offer much hope that big things are ahead for the Big Truck.

Here’s the latest from the powerful and flashy Guyanese:

Boxinginsider.com: What happened to the Mormeck unification fight that was supposed to happen on the Trinidad-Mayorga undercard?

Big Truck Braithwaite:“I don’t know what happened with Mormeck. I was training very hard for this fight. Then like three weeks before the fight I got a phone call that Mormeck was injured. I don’t know what happened with Mormeck. I didn’t get no doctor papers, nobody showed me nothing.”

Boxinginsider.com: Some kind of foot injury they say, right?

Big Truck Braithwaite:“Something like that. I don’t know. We asked for the doctor’s papers but they didn’t show us any. I think he’s scared is what happened.”

Boxinginsider.com: Was it going to be a hard fight?

Big Truck Braithwaite:“It won’t be hard for me, but it would be hard for him.”

Boxinginsider.com: What is it about his style that makes you believe that?

Big Truck Braithwaite:“He has a lot of weaknesses. He don’t move his head. He just keeps coming forward. He don’t know, he just fight coming forward. He don’t like going backwards. He only like to fight off the front foot. So it would be easy for me.”

Boxinginsider.com: How about a match with IBF champ Kelvin Davis?

Big Truck Braithwaite: “I would fight Kelvin Davis too. Kelvin Davis would be an easy fight too. Because he fight just actually the same way - he just keeps coming forward. Don’t like going backwards.”

Boxinginsider.com: What do you think happened to Roy Jones? Why do you think his career ended so shockingly like that?

Big Truck Braithwaite: “I think he did not love boxing like before. So I think he not hungry like before. So I think he got relaxed and that caught up to him.”

Boxinginsider.com: Were you impressed with how Bernard Hopkins destroyed de la Hoya?

Big Truck Braithwaite: “Yeah, I was impressed. I expected Hopkins to win the fight but I didn’t expect him to stop him with a body shot. That was a beautiful shot. That was a well-timed shot. And it was in the right spot.”

Boxinginsider.com: Vivian Harris - your countryman - the WBA Junior Welterweight champion has now seen his last three mandatories - Cotto, Hatton and Mayweather - all decide to skip a fight with him. What’s your take on that?

Big Truck Braithwaite: “It think it’s good and bad. When the mandatories avoid you, you get ring rust. I think it’s a good thing and a bad thing.”

Boxinginsider.com: What’s next for you? What are you looking forward to?

Big Truck Braithwaite: “Well I’m looking forward to fighting anybody. It doesn’t really matter who. But we will see.”

Claire Braithwaite, Big Truck’s mom and manager, wanted to add a few points: “I want to add that Wayne is the only world champion right now from New York City. The October 2nd show was a big card in the tri-state area and Wayne did not fight on the card. I think we should have gotten a replacement for Mormeck. Mayorga did not make weight last time (on April 17th MSG card vs. Rivera) and Don King got a replacement in 24 hours (Mitchell from Philadelphia). They had two weeks to find a replacement but did not get Wayne one. Wayne trained in Florida and had to move to avoid the hurricanes. His trainer Colin Morgan had to leave his family in New York to train Wayne and now they don’t get paid for all their hard work. This has been very disappointing for Wayne and Colin. We hope, we hope Don King will put Wayne on the next Garden show on November 13th.”
