Talkin’ Boxing with Riddick Bowe
Published by BoxingInsider
By Scoop Malinowski
Sit back and enjoy the latest boxing musings of the one and only Big Daddy:
Boxinginsider.com: What’s the latest on you getting back into action?
Riddick Bowe: Same ol’, same ol’. I’m still training. Hopefully for a fight in March. Maybe down in Alabama. Still gonna keep prayin’ that I can get my career going again.
Boxinginsider.com: Are you staying sharp? Feeling good?
Riddick Bowe: Absolutely. I’m on point, like a sniper. The only way these guys can beat me is if I don’t train. They can’t beat me.
Boxinginsider.com: Oh, so you’re feelin’ it again?
Riddick Bowe: Oh, no question.
Boxinginsider.com: What’s your weight now?
Riddick Bowe: 290.
Boxinginsider.com: 290?
Riddick Bowe: Yeah about 290.
Boxinginsider: Whoa, that’s a little heavy isn’t it? You were lighter last time we spoke, before Christmas.
Riddick Bowe: I’m just pullin’ your leg. I’m 270. I just wanted to see what you said [laughter].
Boxinginsider.com: What fight were you in the best shape you were ever in?
Riddick Bowe: First Holyfield fight, unequivocally. As a matter of fact, if I’d've fought King Kong that night, I’d've whipped him too. I think if I fought any heavyweight in history that night, I could’ve beat him.
Boxinginsider.com: Even the Buster Douglas in Tokyo?
Riddick Bowe: That night I’d've beat Buster Douglas.
Boxinginsider.com: Which fighters are you interested to watch and follow today?
Riddick Bowe: I love Trinidad. I know his father, love him too. I think Trinidad is gonna go down in history. He’s a bad cat. I don’t see any middleweight today but Hopkins who can beat him. I don’t see no one beating him.
Boxinginsider.com: He looked great against Mayorga didn’t he?
Riddick Bowe: He dogged Mayorga. He beat him up. That was one helluvan ass-whoopin’. He gave Mayorga the act-right. After he got that whoopin’ he got, he acted right. No more drinkin’ beers or smokin’ cigars. In my book, Mayorga was outclassed. I tell you what, he ain’t clamorin’ for no rematch.
Boxinginsider.com: Were you impressed by Kostya Tszyu, what he did to Sharmba Mitchell?
Riddick Bowe: Sharmba Mitchell could never beat Kostya Tszyu. He doesn’t have enough heart. Kostya Tszyu is just too strong. I’m gonna keep it real. I’m gonna tell you the truth. You can outbox Kostya Tszyu but you can’t outpunch him. You can’t get into a shootout with Kostya Tszyu. With Kostya Tszyu you gotta very careful and in great shape.
Boxinginsider.com: It’s amazing that he is still as successful as he is.
Riddick Bowe: He’s still a hungry fighter. Eventhough he’s a champion, he still fights like he’s hungry. And he’s sharp every time I see him. He had that one lesson from Cool Vince Phillips - Cool Vince put that thing on him - but from that point he learned his lesson. He said to himself, I’m gonna be prepared for everyone from now on.
Boxinginsider.com: How about the fights this past weekend, you watched?
Riddick Bowe: I watch just about all the fights. I like to maybe learn some new little things, keep up to date with what’s going on. I watched that heavyweight from Brooklyn (Monte Barrett), he gave a good account of himself. He stuck in there and eventually knocked him out.
Boxinginsider.com: How about Judah, that was impressive.
Riddick Bowe: I always knew Zab Judah could do it. Just a matter of time before he knocked out Cory Spinks. I think Spinks underestimated Zab Judah. He gave him an opportunity and Zab Judah took full advantage. I thought Zab could have ended it earlier. When he hurt him and he did that dance. Do you remember that? You think he could have stopped him then?
Boxinginsider.com: I’m not sure. But Zab Judah sure is one awesome fighter, he looks spectacular at times, I mean like a Roy Jones. He has the talent to possibly beat Tszyu. He just can’t make any mistakes and stay concentrated.
Riddick Bowe: His whole demeanor was better this time. He was focused and in great shape and he fought a great fight. Take me and his father Yoel - we used to box together. He used to kickbox back then. I used to see Zab and his brothers in the gym 20 years ago. I never would’ve thought 20 years later he’d be a champ. I never would’ve thought that would happen. I’m impressed and happy for him.
