“I’m gonna be able to control Golota.”
“Roy got what he deserved and I’m happy about it actually.”
“You know how they have the Curse of the Bambino, for the Red Sox? Now they have the Curse of the Ruiz, when they fight me.”
Two-time WBA Heavyweight champ recently took time out of his training camp in the Poconos to talk some boxing. Here The Quiet Man sounds off on the demise of Roy Jones, ‘The Curse of The Ruiz”, and what will happen if Andrew Golota gets down and dirty in their upcoming November 13th title fight:
Boxinginsider.com: Were you shocked at what happend at the John Ruiz fight?
John Ruiz: “I didn’t get to see the fight but they told me about it. And the thing is, he actually fought one of the guys that I actually had in training camp when I was fighting Roy Jones. It’s kind of strange, that you know, I think he lost nine fights before fighting Jones. But he was a quick guy, he’s strong and I wasn’t surprised. Jones is the type of fighter that he has to be the frontrunner. And he usually does a lot of things like dropping his hands - and things happen when you start getting pretty. And I’m not surprised that this happened to him now.”
Boxinginsider.com: So you knew how good Glen Johnson was?
John Ruiz:“I think he was a good fighter. I think he was a quick guy, he has some power to him, and I thought that he could actually win the fight.”
Boxinginsider.com: Are you surprised though at how Jones’ career is suddenly over? He looked so spectacular just a short time ago…
John Ruiz: “You know how they have the Curse of the Bambino, for the Red Sox? Now they have the Curse of the Ruiz [smiles] when they fight me. I guess anybody who has ever fought me in their career hasn’t gone anywhere after either winning or losing. So I might be cursed or something [smiles].”
Boxinginsider.com: Who are some of your curse victims?
John Ruiz: “There’s Holyfield [smiles]. There’s a whole bunch of guys. There’s actually a few that I happened to lose to early in my career that happened to disappear after (Sergei Kobozov, the Russian cruiserweight who’s body disappeared without any clues). A lot of fighers.”
Boxinginsider.com: Maybe Tua too.
John Ruiz: “Tua also is another one. Also Rahman who is right now he’s just struggling to fight these guys who are not even ranked. I guess they’re gonna have to believe in the curse then.”
Boxinginsider.com: Next fight is with Andrew Golota, how do you see this fight turning out?
John Ruiz:“It’s gonna be a great fight. I feel it’s a right fight at the right time and it’s gonna show the people that I can fight a tall guy. And handle him well. And it’s a fight that I’m gonna bring out the best in me. And it’s something I haven’t done for a couple of years. And - talkin’ about the Jones thing - it’s like you know I’m always trying to push for the rematch and now he’s on the way out in a way - and he got what he deserved and I’m happy about it actually. The guy’s a - how can I say it without sounding really nasty but - it’s something that I expressed every time. The guy - I gave everything that I could to have that fight made. And at the same time he decided to backstab me. So but the Golota fight I think is gonna be a great fight. And I also feel that I can win this fight. And look good doing it actually. I mean I feel very proud of my training right now and I feel very proud of myself that I’m bringing out the best in me.”
Boxinginsider.com: What’s going to be the difference in this fight style-wise? Why do you feel so confident?
John Ruiz:“Because it’s gonna be a fight where - I saw the fight with Chris Byrd and Golota - and I feel if Chris Byrd had enough power in him, he would control the fight and keep Golota on his toes and stuff. But I felt that was lacking in the fight. Now with me fighting Golota, it’s gonna be a fight that people are gonna see that. People are gonna see my strength and power, that I’m gonna be able to control Golota. And at one point, he’s gonna feel like - you know, he starts low-blowing and throwing headbutts when he feels like he has nothing else to lose. And that’s the whole thing. When he starts to quit on the fight, that’s when he starts doing that stuff. And one things for sure, I’m gonna be on him. I’m gonna make sure he doesn’t do it. Enough is enough. If I have to, I’m gonna basically do the same thing.”
