WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS

July 28, 2008 – Mexico City.

From WBC President Jose Sulaiman:

“I am a friend of Dr. Ching-Kuo Wu, the new President of AIBA (International Amateur Boxing Association), and have a lot of respect for him and his principles of honesty, integrity and impartiality, as well as his striving for the best in his organization.

“I am suggesting to President Wu that he take a very important step in the history of amateur boxing, which is to warn the ring officials that will work in the coming Olympic Games in Beijing, China, to devote themselves absolutely to the principles of honesty, impartialitiy, competency, and loyalty to the AIBA institution, and that those who do not should be eliminated from the Olympic Games and never be appointed officially by AIBA again.

“I believe strongly in Dr. Wu’s honestly and intregrity, and am confident that he will work very hard to erase the apparent corruption that has existed in the past with some of AIBA’s ring officials and hurt many innocent boxers and nations who have deserved to win medals with their actions in the ring only to see them given to others because of the judges.

“I wish the best Olympic boxing games ever for Dr. Wu, and wish him good luck next month.

“The WBC will hold its 46th annual world convention in Chengdu, China, from November 2 - 8 after the Olympic Games that will end in August.

“The WBC regrets to announce the passing away in London, England, of Mrs. Edward Thangarajah on Sunday, July 27, and declares today a day of mourning in the WBC. She was the wife of our dear member of the Board of Governors, Edward Thangarajah.

“Mrs. Thangarajah devoted her life for the love and care of her dear family, and lived with a passion and devotion to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

“May she rest in everlasting peace, and may God bring to our dear Edward and his family a prompt resignation to such a deep sorrow.

“All of the members of the Board of Governors and myself have the closest friendship and empathy for the Thangarajah family and especially for our colleague, who is one of the most loyal WBC members ever.”

MSG IS ALL ABOUT BOXING ON MONDAY NIGHTS IN AUGUST WITH “MSG AT THE MOVIES”

“Kings of the Ring” to be telecast on Monday, August 4 at 8:00 p.m.

“Requiem for A Heavyweight” to be telecast on Monday, August 11 at 8:00 p.m.

“Orthodox Stance” to be telecast on Monday, August 18 at 8:00 p.m.

“Girlfight” to be telecast on Monday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m.

New York, NY, July 30, 2008 – MSG will telecast an exciting lineup of boxing films in the month of August on “MSG at the Movies”. Films included in the Monday night line up are “Kings of the Ring,” “Requiem for a Heavyweight,” “Orthodox Stance,” and “Girlfight.” “MSG at the Movies” is hosted by Scott Lasky, special guest interviews are included along with each film.

Below is a list of the four titles to be featured in August as a part of “MSG at the Movies:”

Kings of the Ring (1995) - Monday, August 4 at 8:00 p.m.

Sports documentarian Bud Greenspan presents this examination of four of the most important men to ever don boxing gloves, men who helped define and glorify the sport of boxing: Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali. As well as being an overview of the Sweet Science, “Kings of the Ring” probes into the private lives of the heavyweight champs and the travails that they faced outside the ring, with special attention to the context of their times and the roles that the fighters played in reflecting and shaping society.

“MSG at the Movies” host Scott Lasky talks with former heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner, who went 15 rounds with world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali in a 1975 fight, as part of this telecast.

Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962) - Monday, August 11 at 8:00 p.m.

Mountain Rivera (Anthony Quinn) is at the end of his boxing career after a knockout by Cassius Clay in the seventh round. His left eye is one punch from permanent trauma, his speech is slurred from “being hit a million times,” and he slings punches anytime he hears a bell, but his trainer and ‘cutman’ Army (Mickey Rooney), and Miss Miller (Julie Harris), a manipulative social worker, support his illusion that he could be a movie usher, a camp counselor, or a romantic partner for Miller. His manager Maish Rennick (Jackie Gleason), knowing the truth, can’t admit that he bet everything he had that Rivera wouldn’t go four rounds against Clay. Maish will pay with his life if he can’t persuade Rivera to abandon his pride (”I fought 111 fights and never took a dive”) and agree to a wrestling contract of which he’s ashamed. When Maish blurts out his secret, Rivera realizes that walking out on the deal is not an option. To save the neck of the man who’s betrayed him, he embraces the humiliating role of wrestling as “Big Chief Mountain Rivera,” and the illusion of camaraderie among the three men is gone forever.

Boxing Historian Bert Sugar talks with “MSG at the Movies” host Scott Lasky and guest co-host Jeffrey Lyons as part of this telecast.

Orthodox Stance (2007) - Monday, August 18 at 8:00 p.m.

Dmitriy Salita, a 25 year-old Russian immigrant is making history as a top professional boxer and a rigorously observant Jew. While providing an intimate, 3-year long look at the trials and tribulations faced by an up and coming professional boxer, “Orthodox Stance” is a portrait of seemingly incompatible cultures and characters working together to support Dmitriy’s rare and remarkable devotion to both Orthodox Judaism and the pursuit of a professional boxing title. In the end, the film is about more than just boxing and religion, but a young man’s search for meaning in life.

Girlfight (2000) - Monday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m.

At 18, Diana (Michelle Rodriguez) has a chip on her shoulder; she’s close to expulsion from high school for fighting, her mother has passed away, her dad is surly and the popular girls at school hate her. When she picks up her younger brother at a Brooklyn gym where he boxes, she decides she wants to train. Hector, a coach, reluctantly agrees to teach her. It’s soon clear to him that Diana has talent and he pushes her. She spends time with another young fighter, Adrian, who has a girlfriend, but Diana intrigues him and stirs real feelings he tries to articulate. She, too, must accommodate her toughness and feelings for him.

As part of this telecast “MSG at the Movies” host Scott Lasky, along with guest co-host Jeffrey Lyons, talk with boxing historian Bert Sugar, boxing trainer Hector Roca, who trained Michelle Rodriguez for the film, and professional boxer Alicia Ashley, who appeared in the film.

Andrade feels Golden

BEIJING (July 29, 2008) – Reigning AIBA World welterweight champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade is prospecting for gold in China. The 20-year-old from Providence isn’t there to visit the The Great Wall, purchase a Ming vase in the Temple of Heaven, picnic in Tian’anmen Square, or cruise down the Yangtze River.

Andrade is Team USA’s most promising hope to medal in the Olympic boxing competition. “It’s crazy,” he said right before leaving Colorado Springs training camp, “but everything’s good. I’m relaxed, stayed out of the public eye, and have remained focused on winning a gold medal. I’m not happy just being in The Olympics, or even winning a silver or bronze medal; I’m going for gold.”

His gold medal performance at this year’s AIBA World Championships catapulted him into the No. 1 ranking in the world at 152-pounds. Andrade’s toughest competition figures to come from Asian champion Bakhyt Sarsekbayev (Kazakhstan), World Championships silver medalist Non Boonjumnong (Thailand), as well as bronze medalists Adem Kilicci (Turkey) and Hmati Silamu (China), European champion Andrey Balnov (Russia), and of course, Cuba’s representative, Carlos Banteur.

The Olympic draw doesn’t matter to him because Demetrious believes he’s the best 152-pound amateur in the world. He defeated Boonjumnong and Kilicci in the World Championships. “Nobody they put in front of me can beat me,” a confident Andrade offered. “Only the judges can beat me and I’m not going to let them. I’m going to take the other fighters and judges out of it by beating my opponents so badly that they can’t take a decision away from me. I’ll stay on the outside, use my tough defense, and not allow any cheap shots. I’ve been fighting internationally for awhile and I’ve been robbed a few times. But I can’t let anybody beat me in The Olympics.

“I’d prefer to get the tougher guys out early – second or third round – and have one less contender for the medal rounds. I really don’t know or care who I draw. Everybody else is fighting for second place.”
Proud to represent the red, white and blue, “Boo Boo” has dreamed about boxing in the Olympics since he first laced-up a pair of gloves. He is a two-time U.S. National Championships winner and double National Golden Gloves champion who cruised through the U.S. Boxing Trials preceding the World Championships.

“It feels good to be called an ambassador,” Andrade reflected. “I used to be a little kid dreaming of being in the Olympics and now I’m talking to kids with the same dream. I tell them to never let anybody say no to their dreams. It feels great to represent the United States, Rhode Island, Providence, family and friends.

“I haven’t worried about anything. Inside the ring is another environment with just you and your opponent. I’ve been focusing on the physical part of boxing. My (co-coaches) dad (Paul Andrade) and Dave Keefe have helped me all of the other stuff.

Impacted wisdom teeth and the best amateur boxers in the world couldn’t stop Demetrius at the World Championships. Now, he’s digging deep for gold in China.

Andrade boxes out of the 401 Boxing Club in Cranston (RI). Go on line to www.boobooboxing.com for more information about Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade.

Huck to fight Monrose for European Cruiserweight Title on September 20

Marco “Captain” Huck (21-1, 16 KOs) will take on European cruiserweight champion Jean Marc Monrose (24-1, 15 KOs) in his hometown of Bielefeld on September 20. It will be a special fight for the 23-year-old who returns to the place where he almost celebrated the biggest success of his career. Back in December 2007, IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham handed Huck the first defeat of his career. “The support of my home fans was phenomenal,” Huck said. “This time I will leave the ring victorious. Winning the European title would bring me much closer to a world title fight. And I am really looking forward to returning to Bielefeld. I have to make amends for the Cunningham fight.”

Huck bounced back with two straight wins, including a ninth-round TKO victory over Frantisek Kasanic to clinch the IBF Intercontinental Title. Huck stopped the hard-hitting Slovakian despite suffering a broken jaw in the fourth round. Three days after the fight, he successfully underwent surgery in Berlin. Six screws and one titanium plate were inserted into his jaw. “I don´t have any problems any more,” Huck said. “I have recovered fully and things have been going very good in practice.”

A victory over Monrose would put Huck back in line for a shot at the world title, and coach Ulli Wegner is optimistic his fighter will make the most out of this opportunity. “He has learned his lesson from the Cunningham fight,” Wegner said. “He has given the right answer in practice. He comes closer to fighting to his potential every day. I am sure he will confirm his good shape against Monrose.”

In the co-featured main event, newly-crowed European super-middleweight champion Karo Murat (17-0, 11 KOs) will make his first title defence against Gabriel Campillo (16-1, 6 KOs). “I am looking forward to returning to Bielefeld,” Murat said. Back in December, he stopped Emiliano Cayetano in the seventh round of an entertaining fight. “I will continue where I left it.”

STAR BOXING ANNOUNCES ONE NIGHT, TWO SHOWS, THREE GREAT FIGHTS

“HURRICANE” LOOKS TO CONTINUE HIS STORM THROUGH JR. WELTERWEIGHT, KNOCKOUT ARTIST MADDALONE LOOKS TO DISPOSE ANOTHER FOE, “DRAGON” LOOKS TO SET FIRE TO HEAVYWEIGHT DIVISION

Bronx,NY - Jul 24, 2008 On Wednesday August 6th Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing is teaming up with Sal Musumeci’s Final Forum to promote ESPN2’s “Wednesday Night Fights” telecast from the Aviator Sports and Recreation Center in Brooklyn, NY. That same night Star Boxing, in association with DiBella Entertainment, are putting together a card at the B.B. King Blues Club in New York City, New York. One night, two shows, three great fights make for one extremely exciting night of boxing.

In the main event of the ESPN2 broadcast from the Aviator in Brooklyn, Star Boxing’s hot Jr. welterweight prospect Ali “Hurricane” Oubaali (21-3, 17KO’s) takes on tough Christopher “Kid Kayo” Fernandez (15-4-1, 9KO’s). Oubaali, originally from Courrieres, France signed with DeGuardia prior to moving to the U.S. in 2007. Oubaali has not lost a fight since 2004, and since signing with Star Boxing has put together two impressive performances, a TKO in the fourth over Victorio Abadia and a ten round unanimous decision over Ashley Theophane.

In Oubaali’s last fight he beat Theophane (20- 2-1, 7KO’s at the time) in a 10 round co-feature shown on ESPN2. Oubaali lived up to his nick-name, “Hurricane,” and continuously pressured Theophane for the entire 10 round contest. Oubaali’s fan friendly, come forward, non-stop punching style, has enabled him to quickly establish a fan base here in America.

Star Boxing CEO and founder Joe DeGuardia is excited to once again feature Ali on ESPN2. “He is exciting, and he comes to fight. Every time he is in the ring he gives the crowd what they want to see. He is fast, he throws a lot of punches, he can take a good shot and, as you can see by his record, he can certainly knock you out,” said DeGuardia. “We feel that after a couple more fights people will really begin noticing this kid, and it will only be a matter of time before we get him a shot at a world title in the 140 lb. division.”

In the co-feature of the night Star Boxing once again showcases one of its top heavyweights, Albert “The Dragon” Sosnowski (43-1, 26KO’s) who is set to take on Kevin Burnett (13-1-1, 8KO’s). Sosnowski last fought on April 25th against Terrell Nelson, stopping Nelson in the fifth. The Sosnowski vs. Nelson bout was the co- feature on that weeks ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights”. Since teaming up with Star, Sosnowski has been impressive and DeGuardia expects big things out of the 29 year old native of Warsaw, Poland. “I think that he has all the tools to take over the heavyweight division. We feel that we can really move Albert along and after a few more fights have him in the position to take on one of the top world rated contenders,” stated DeGuardia.

Tickets are priced at $200, $100, $75 and $50 and can be purchased by calling (718)823-2000 or by going to www.starboxing.com. Doors open at 6:30 with the first bout scheduled to go off at 7:30. The Aviator is located on Flatbush Ave, just south of the Belt Parkway, Exit 11S, Brooklyn, NY 11234 (718) 758- 7500.

MADDALONE: LIVES FOR THE KNOCKOUT
Fan favorite knockout artist Vinny Maddalone (29-4, 20KO’s) is back in action and looks to continue his winning ways and re- establish himself as the most exciting heavyweight in the world when he takes on Joe Stofle (11- 13- 2, 10KO’s) on August 6th at the B.B. King Blues Club in New York City, New York.
Maddalone was last seen on March 6th at the Grand Ballroom in New York City, NY where he dismantled and destroyed Jeff Yeoman (21-9, 8KO’s) in less than two rounds. Maddalone who recently re-signed with DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, feels that he is going to surprise a lot of people in the coming year, and that he belongs among the top heavyweights in the world.

“I give the fans what they want to see,” said Maddalone. “I am not just in there for a payday or just to go through the motions, I am in there to look good, give the fans something exciting to watch, and ultimately knock my opponent out. The fans come to see the knockout, and that’s what I try to give them. I feel really good, I am one hundred percent healthy now, and I honestly feel that I am going to turn a lot of heads in the next year,” stated Maddalone.

Joe DeGuardia is excited about both shows on August 6th and believes that this is something that boxing needs. “On August 6th I am teaming up with not one, but two of the top promoters in the New York Area to put on two great shows. This is what boxing needs, for us promoters to work together to put together exciting shows and give the fans what they want to see. Each show is loaded with top level talent, along with some of the top young prospects to hit the boxing world in a long time,” said DeGuardia. “I expect Ali, Vinny and Albert to put on spectacular showings come fight night. August 6th is going to be a great night for boxing, a great night for the fans who will be attending or watching, and a great night for New York City,” stated DeGuardia.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling Star Boxing at (718) 823-2000 or by going to www.starboxing.com. Tickets are priced at $160 (VIP seats and VIP tables), $100 (ringside seats and ringside tables), and $60 (standing room only).

BANK JOB FOR MACCARINELLI!

Enzo Maccarinelli will enjoy home advantage for his WBO World Cruiserweight title challenge against Johnathon Banks after promoter Frank Warren won purse bids for the fight.

Warren put in a successful bid at the WBO’s offices in Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

Maccarinelli is aiming to recapture the WBO crown he lost against David Haye in March this year, and the Welshman was delighted when he heard the news about the purse bid.

“Frank Warren has delivered for me again, and I can’t wait to get back into action and win my title back,”

“The loss to Haye was hard to swallow because I know I could have done better but that is in the past and I’m focused on getting back to winning ways again,” said 27-year-old Maccarinelli.

“Banks is supposed to be the next big thing in America, but I’ll cut him down to size.

Banks, undefeated in 20 fights, recently captured the IBO title when he out-pointed Vincenzo Rossitto on the Klitschko-Thompson undercard in Germany.

A protege of Manny Steward, Banks comes from Detroit and boxes out of the Kronk Gym, registering 14 KOs in his impressive professional career.

Warren said, “He’s been pestering me for another world title chance since that loss to Haye, and I’m pleased that I’ve been able to deliver.”

A date and venue for the fight will be confirmed at a later date.

KHAN WORKS OUT WITH RUBIO

Amir Khan’s new trainer Jorge Rubio has promised to help deliver a world title to the 21-year-old.

Rubio was unveiled as Khan’s new cornerman over the weekend.

And the Florida-based Cuban met the press today in Bolton with Khan, and said he is among the most talented fighters he has worked with.

If all goes to plan, Rubio will help guide Khan to a world title within the next 12 months.

Promoter Frank Warren is confident that his protege - who enjoys high rankings with the WBO, IBF and WBC- will make it to the top.

“It’s my ambition to make Amir a world champion,” said Rubio, who oversaw an intense media workout at Khan’s Bolton gym.

“I believe he has got the talent to reign for years.

“I have been working on his defence and his footwork, but I’m not looking at changing him too much, just improving on certain areas.

“It will take time, but Amir has already got better in the few weeks I’ve worked with him, and I’m seeing the difference every day.

“Amir Khan is a smart guy and only I have to tell him something once before he puts into practice. He has all the tools to become a world champion.”

Rubio’s innovative training techniques were on display in Bolton, as Khan worked on his footwork and head movement in a ring traversed by ropes.

“Jorge is a great trainer,” said undefeated Commonwealth champion Khan. “I knew as soon as I met him that he was the man for me.

“I’d met Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach and really liked Floyd Mayweather Snr, but when I hooked up with Jorge I loved his style and his teaching methods.

“I think I’ve been hit more by him that I have been by my opponents, because if I leave my hands low, even by a fraction of an inch, he whacks me one with the pads!

“He’s got me moving my head a lot more and slipping shots, and I think I’ve come on a lot just in two weeks.

“He can definitely take me to the next level which is a world title.”

The 21-year-old, unbeaten in 18 fights, is next in action at the MEN Arena, Manchester, on September 6.

Tickets for 2 Hot 2 Handle, priced at £30, £40, £50, £100, £150 and £200, are available from www.frankwarren.tv
