Recently the Wladimir Klitschko-Tony Thompson press conference was held in Germany however for whatever reason, this first-time face-off between the two combatants did not garner any press coverage here in the U.S.
Boxinginsider has received word from a source who was present that Thompson did not play the part of the shrinking violet at this press conference. Appearing in excellent physical condition, attired in a snazzy suit and tie and adorned in wire-rimmed spectacles, a highly confident and hungry Thompson said straight to Klitschko’s face, I’m going to knock you out and make it look easy.
Klitschko made a four-minute speech in German to the German media and Thompson, sitting to the IBF/WBO champ’s left with promoter Dan Gooseen at his side, had an interpreter speaking in his ear, presumably telling Tony The Tiger the words his rival was speaking about him. Of Thompson, Klitschko expressed respect for his challenger and said he has waited a long time and deserves his shot at the heavyweight titles.
Now regarding Thompson’s in-your-race trash talk, Klitschko has heard it all before and then some in his 12-year pro career. However the left-handed, six-ft, six-in Thompson who has only one career loss (to Eric Kirkland in 2000) is a threat that Team Klitschko is taking very, very seriously. Most of the boxing world may not believe much in Thompson’s chances however Klitschko and Emanuel Steward are well aware of the danger Thompson presents. Thompson’s bold words have been duly noted and come fight night, Klitschko vowed, “July 12 will be my victory.”
