Q&A with Enzo Calzaghe: “Joe Changed Plans Without Difficulty”
Published by BoxingInsider
By Scoop Malinowski
Like a soothsayer, Enzo Calzaghe declared, with 100% certainty, “Joe will kick his ass,” before the fight. That is exactly what happened to Roy Jones Jr. Now what does the master trainer have to say about his son’s future? A rematch with Hopkins? Retirement?
Boxinginsider: Incredible performance from Joe once again. Were there any surprises in what Roy Jones showed you? Or did the fight go as expected?
Enzo Calzaghe: “No, no. I was surprised the way Joe, more or less, I was surprised the way Joe transacted his movements, the way he changed the plans. That’s what happened, he changed it without difficulty. I’d have to go back and say, Listen, you changed, you’re falling behind. He re-adjusted immediately. He found a method, he watches the right hand and started to use feints, that he was taught as a kid. He did that when he was 14-15 years old, when he was in amateurs. And I knew Roy Jones was set in forth to feints. He still punched with a little bit of fear. He feints. So every time he feints, Roy Jones is panicking, in a sense. So that’s Joe’s upbringing. Kessler does it as well. He does feints. And he was falling for the feints. So he was biting away. He was losing his stamina, just (from being) feinted. These are things you can’t teach people. It’s something that does not come in a book. (Joe) always finds a method. And job done.”
Boxinginsider: No rematches with Hopkins?
Enzo Calzaghe: “None of my boxers have rematches.”
Boxinginsider: Why?
Enzo Calzaghe: “Because I don’t like it! I don’t like it.”
Boxinginsider: But Ali and Frazier.
Enzo Calzaghe: “That’s Ali. This is Joe Calzaghe. If you beat someone…if you ever lose to someone, yeah, have a rematch. Yeah. I don’t mind that. That’s a good idea. Might try that in my next [smiles]. I never tried losing so I don’t know.”
Boxinginsider: Is this the last one? Aren’t you gonna miss it? Never seeing your work of art in the ring again?
Enzo Calzaghe: “I could smack him [smiles]. I’m his father. He’s my lad. No, I will never miss it. Joe will still be in boxing with me. He’ll be boxing promoting, training with me. It ain’t finished. The story is not finished.”
Boxinginsider: Perfect time to end his active career though.
Enzo Calzaghe: “But I’m happy. I’d be happy really if he stopped now. There’s nothing left to be achieved.”
Boxinginsider: Couldn’t be a more perfect way to go out.
Enzo Calzaghe: “I think so, I think so. And if he said it, I’ll abide by his wishes. I’ll be wishing him the best with what he does. I would like him to retire. His mother wants him to finish. His father’s got the old cane [smiles].”
