Mark Melligen, Philippines (17-2-0) won by 6th-round KO against Raymond Gatica of Austin, Texas (11-1-0). It was a welterweight fight with the Filipino scoring a knockdown in the 5th round and scored a 6th-round knockout win as referee waive off the contest at 2:36.
Bernabe Concepcion, Philippines (28-3-1) won by UD against Mario Santiago, Puerto Rico (21-2-1).
The scorecards favoring the Filipino after he scored a knockdown in the 6th against the Puerto Rican. By winning the fight, Concepcion was promised to face the dangerous Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico in the Summer.
Gerry Penalosa, Philippines (54-8-2) lost a 12-round split decision to Eric Morel, Puerto Rico (42-2-0). The Filipino was the aggresor early in the fight while the Puerto Rican opted to box. They clashed heads in the 6th round, damaging the Filipino with cuts and bleeding, the Filipino pressed for more action in the late rounds with the Puerto Rican retreated and avoiding to go toe to toe. However, two judges saw Morel as the winner. Some independent press people thought Penalosa won the fight.
Ciso Morales, Philippines (14-1-0) lost by 1st-round KO against Fernando Montiel, Mexico (40-2-0) for the WBO bantamweight title. A left hook to the body made the Filipino unable to continue and he was counted out. It was the first fight of the young Filipino prospect in America and it was also his first chance for a world title.
Nonito Donaire, Philippines (23-1-0) won against the late substitute Manuel Vargas, Mexico (34-9-0). The Filipino Flash displayed superior boxing skills and was not threatened for the two rounds until he scored a KO with left uppercut in the 3rd round. A rematch with Vic Darchinyan is a possibility later this year.
Manny Pacquaio was in attendance and did some commentary for Philippine TV. He later took on the microphone to pledge support for the injured Filipino boxer Z Gorres.
