For the next installment Part III of this exclusive series with Phil Landman, we will learn what the exact training regimen is for Miguel for two days this week as he prepares for the Welterweight showdown with Antonio Margarito. Read on to gain insight into a nutshell of what a exactly one of the world’s very best boxers does to achieve the physical condition required to box 12 rounds. How far does he run at what time? When is rest? When is meal time? When and how many rounds is the sparring? Phil Landman has the answers!

Phil Landman: “We wake up around 4:30 every morning except for Sundays – Miguel’s recovery day. Our run or conditioning work start at 5 am and lasts about an hour depending on the type or length of that day’s work. Today, Monday (4 weeks to the fight) we did a moderate to high intensity 45-minute run. I prepare a shake and the day’s first installment of supplements for after the run. The shake is a combination of a vegetable supplement and protein, not the best tasting but effective. Miguel’s meal plan consists of five meals through out the day, keeping his metabolism working efficiently, effectively and consistently – very important with his workload and the importance of recovery.

“He will rest until the afternoon, with our next training at 1 pm. Today is sparring day (the work set forth by Uncle Evangelista). After his sparing session we will do some core work followed by stretching and another dreaded shake. Actually, Miguel does a really great job at consistently taking his supplement and shakes, both a very important part of his overall daily routine. The rest of the day is spent for recovery, massage, etc.


“Tomorrow (Tuesday) we have our conditioning work scheduled. Our wake up time is the same as Monday -the schedule is pretty routine throughout the week. The workload is decreasing as we move closer to the fight, allowing for overall recovery from the prior weeks of training. Our 1 pm workout consists of some mitt/bag work of which the number of rounds is decided by his Uncle. We finish off the session with core and stretching. After a short break we complete the scheduled strength work and the rest of the day is dedicated to rest. Our strength routine workload decreases weekly at this point, not as demanding, more maintenance based, allowing for more focus and energy dedicated toward the sparing sessions. Miguel has been doing an amazing job and his commitment to his work is 100%. The results of which are showing, he is relaxed and seems to be enjoying the work and his boxing – a very important part of his work and preparation.”
