Status: WBC mandatory no. 1 ranked super middleweight for WBC champ Marcus Beyer..

Ht: 6-1 1/2  Wt: 168

Born On: January 7, 1967  In:  New Bedford, MA

Childhood Heroes:  “Not really. I used to like Evel Knievel. Muhammad Ali – I looked up to him. My favorite boxer of all-time was Sugar Ray Robinson.”

Nickname:  “Sandman – that’s it.”

Hobbies/Interests:  “I like riding motorcycles. As a matter of fact, when I was a kid I wanted to race motocross. But it’s hard to compete with all those rich kids from California.”

Favorite Movies:  “Let’s see, I have quite a few…The Sixth Sense, Bronx Tale, The Bourne Identity, The Usual Suspects, of course Rocky I and II – those were great.”

Musical Tastes:  “Alternative, Incubus, Three Doors Down, I was brought up on heavy metal – Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden.”

Favorite TV Shows:  “I really couldn’t say I have a favorite. I like Sponge Bob Square Pants, it’s funny as hell. Of course I like watching ESPN.”

Early Boxing Memory:  “I fought at the YMCA when I was six. We were doing an exhibition. The kid I was boxing with was a friend of mine. He beat my ass. I could have done better but I kind of held back because he was my friend. But I got over that real quick. Because that’s when I realized when you get in the ring, there are no friends in the ring. You can be friends before and after but not when you’re in the ring.”

Favorite Meal:  “I like filet mignon steak.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Chocolate.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal:  “Let’s see…I’d say Cocoa Pebbles.”

First Job:  “I worked for my father in a fish plant. In Fair Haven (age 11).”

First Car:  “1968 maroon Pontiac GTO.”

Pre-Fight Feeling:  “I guess I think about, Did I train hard enough for the fight? Am I ready for the fight? I believe fights are won and lost in the gym. So I believe in getting in the best possible shape that I can. And I hope that if luck plays a role in the fight, that it plays a role on my behalf. (Look at opponent upon entering ring?) Yeah, I mean, I look at him. I’m not like, hate the guy I’m in there with. It’s more like I might see if there’s any lard around his midsection. I might try to size him up like that.”

Greatest Sports Moment:  “I have to say when I stopped Sheika (2004). I don’t think anybody thought that that was gonna happen. He’s a very dangerous opponent. He’s been in a lot of tough wars. Nobody’s ever stopped him like that before. I think I can stop anyone out there, I think I have that type of power. You have to land it, of course.”

Most Painful Moment:  “It wasn’t any of my losses. When I got arrested right before I was supposed to fight Thomas Tate. I was in Big Bear, sparring with Fernando Vargas (2001) when I heard the FBI was looking for me. I was coming back to turn myself in – they didn’t give me the chance, they arrested me at the airport in Rhode Island. They said it was an extortion charge. The sad part is I didn’t know I was extorting anybody. I sat in jail for eight months and 23 days. That was after a 17-month layoff. I thought that might be a little too long for someone my age. I went into a big depression. I thought my career was over.”

Favorite Boxers To Watch:  “Sugar Ray Robinson is my all-time favorite boxer to watch. I like Bernard Hopkins. He doesn’t have great speed or power, he doesn’t do anything great. But he does everything good and that’s what makes him a great fighter. He has good speed, power, boxing skills, technique, he keeps his chin tucked in nice…he’s a throwback fighter from the old days. Floyd Mayweather – he’s a bad dude.”

Worst Injury:  “Let me think…I’ve broken my eardrums throughout the years, a total of six times. I’ve lost a little bit of my hearing, it’s not as crisp or sharp as it used to be. I’ve also cracked ribs, hurt both of my hands, cracked my nose, been cut on a few occasions – but nothing too major.”

Funny Boxing Memory:  “Yeah, in my last fight I was fighting Jimmy Crawford at Foxwoods. I was in the dressing room and about to be called out. My trainer (Sean Raysor) was passing around this piece of paper, ‘Never trust an Indian.’ It was a joke thing. Barbara Walters asked an Indian why he had only one feather? The Indian replied, Me **** only one squaw, have only one feather. Then she asked an Indian why he had four feathers? Me **** four squaws have four feathers. Then she asked the chief…Me **** ‘em all, big, short, fat, small…I was laughing so hard, couldn’t even finish reading it [laughs]. I was laughing my ass off when they called me to the ring. As I entered the ring I was still thinking about it. It was so funny.”

Embarrassing Moment:  “One time I was going out to fight and I had diarrhea. And I went in my pants a little bit. I ended up knocking the kid out in the first round. Thank God. If it went anymore  I might’ve had a little accident in the ring. (How did you KO him?) I hit him with the first jab I threw and it knocked him down. He walked right into it. I remember the look on his face when he was down. He got up and I jumped on him and finished it. That was back in one of my first ten fights. I’ve been boxing for 12 years.”

People Qualities Most Admired:  “Honesty. It’s just a lonely bird. When people are honest, that’s like one of the best qualities.”
