Status: Boxing trainer.

Born On: May 28, 1922 In: New York, NY

Childhood Heroes: “Willie Pep. My older brother Carl. Almost anybody in boxing.”

Hobbies/Interests: “Take care of my grandchildren. I have fun with them. I like doing things for them, taking them out to eat at fast food places or going to see them play soccer or softball.”

Childhood Dream: “Stay alive. Have fun. Take care of myself and grow up someday. Even though I played softball and football, boxing was always my life.”

Early Boxing Memory: “My fondest memories were watching my brother Carl fight. Going over to Gleason’s Gym when I was 18. Watching the great managers and trainers - how they maneuvered, how they trained their fighters. Guys like Chickie Ferraro, Johnny Sudol. And after caddying 18 holes in the morning, I’d hitchhike up to Greenwood Lake (N.Y.) or Pompton Lakes (N.J.) and watch Jack Blackburn train Joe Louis. Pick up pointers. I enjoyed the newspaper stories, fight columns, watching the people that ran the business.”

Favorite Movies: “On The Waterfront. Fight pictures - The Harder They Fall. Three Days of the Condor. The Way We Were - I saw that three times. Used People. Unforgiven. Grumpy Old Men. Pictures with meaning. Stories that you can laugh about, cry about.”

Pre-Fight Feeling: “Usually calm. Once we walk down the aisle, I know my job - the motivation, concentration and the focus of the fighter. I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do for my fighter. There’s only one object - that’s to win the fight and protect my fighter. Once we’re in the ring, it’s all business.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “When my kids won the Olympics in 1984 - Meldrick Taylor, Mark Breland, Pernell Whitaker and Tyrell Biggs. Four gold medal winners all in one day. Just a great day. And Holyfield got a bronze. And when Holyfield knocked out Buster Douglas. I had alway vowed that one day I’d have a heavyweight champion of the world. My partner - Rocky Marciano - we were partners. I dedicated it to him. I was running around the ring, saying, This is for you! (His brother) Peter Marciano was there. That was one of my favorite moments.”

Most Painful Moment: “The death of Rocky Marciano. I was driving home, up the Garden State Parkway from the Jersey Shore. I heard it on the radio. Had to pull off the side of the road. My wife had to drive and it was a bad scene. When you talk about bad scenes, that’s one that I remember.”

Favorite Meal: “Italian or Spanish food.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Fruit, oatmeal.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Vanilla.”

Closest Boxing Friend: “Rocky Marciano. He was my friend. A great guy. He did more for boxing, more charitable work, community work than people even write about. He helped ex-fighters.”

Favorite Boxers To Watch: “Pernell Whitaker - a master. Ray Robinson. Joe Louis. Lennox Lewis. David Tua - like another Marciano-type fighter. I expect a lot of things out of him. James Toney - if he fights a guy that wants to fight him, it’s exciting. Holyfield. Tyson.”

People Most Admired: “Anybody that becomes a successful fighter. They come off the streets the hard way. Like Rocky Marciano. The ones that have the decency to go back. To take care of friends and family. And still be associated with them. And accept them, not walk away. I still live in the same house, for 50 years. I’m talking about loyalty. And I admire anyone that respects their parents and shows respect to their friends.”

Future Ambitions: “Stay in boxing, as I will. When I go out, I want it to be in boxing, not at the kitchen table [laughs]. I want my fighters to come back in boxing. They take courses in college. We send them to school. I want to see them as TV commentators or trainers.”
