STATUS: Boxing promoter.
BORN ON: July 4, 1963 IN: Bronx, NY
HOBBIES/INTERESTS: Spend time with my son (Joseph). And that could be anything from playing ball to playing chess with him or boxing. Whatever he wants to do.
FUNNY BOXING MEMORY: What’s so funny about boxing, the funny things are also the crazy things and they happen often. One former world champ, we went through all kinds of hell because he missed his flight to training camp. So we had to switch his flight, set up the limousine, get him a driver. Then I get a call at 6:15 am from the fighter complaining how the limo driver was an asshole because he wouldn’t let his two rottweilers in the limousine [laughs]. This was after 12 hours of doing arrangements because he missed his first flight. There’s thousands of stories like that in boxing.
FAVORITE MOVIES: Rocky, The Godfather.
MUSICAL TASTES: All kinds, from country to pop rock straight through to jazz. Shania Twain. Oak Ridge Boys.
FAVORITE TV SHOWS: I watch a lot of late-night TV when I get home, to unwind. I like the History Channel. Used to be the Odd Couple and Star Trek.
EARLY BOXING MEMORY: I have a lot of good memories. It’s so much fun thinking of the actual memories of amateur days when boxing is purely for the love of the sport. I remember when I was 4-5 boxing with my father (Joe) every night in the basement. I remember my first fight, nine-years-old. Getting ready, getting dressed. I remember there was a guy filming in my dressing room. And I remember saying, You shouldn’t film me when I’m in my underwear [smiles]. Boxing was a lot of fun. I spent every day in the gym, six days a week from eight years old on. I couldn’t wait to get to the gym.
FAVORITE MEAL: Lamb chops and macaroni and cheese.
FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR: Ben & Jerry’s peanut butter.
CHILDHOOD DREAM: I always wanted to be a lawyer. And I wanted to win the Olympics and the Golden Gloves. I ended up two out of three. Didn’t get the Olympics.
GREATEST SPORTS MOMENT: When I won the Golden Gloves in 1988. Open class, 147. Beat Larry Barnes by decision. At Madison Square Garden.
MOST PAINFUL MOMENT: Personally, I guess in ‘81. I got a really bad decision in the semi-finals of the Gloves (loss to Nelson Tavarez). Then I’d been in a car accident in ‘81. I was out of boxing for six years. I was a passenger in a car, went through the windshield. The tree jumped in front of him [smiles]. 17-years-old. I missed six years of boxing. As far as outside of the game, when the reality strikes that people you think are your friends, aren’t.
FAVORITE VACATION SPOT: I love to travel. Every vacation I’m on is my favorite. Till the next one.
PEOPLE MOST ADMIRED: Loyalty is a very strong quality I admire. Truthfulness. As well as straight-forwardness. If you got bad news, say it.
