Status: Top boxing trainer. Former IBF Jr. Welterweight Champion and WBC Welterweight Champion.

Born On: January 17, 1964 In: Brentwood, N.Y.

Childhood Heroes: “My mother Doreatha.”

Hobbies/Interests: “Playing handball - I love to play handball. Play cards.”

Nicknames: “Mr. Magoo, Headquarters, Buddy.”

Favorite Movies: “Wooo, gosh. The Harder They Fall. And Silence of the Lambs. I love Hannibal Lecter [smiles].”

Early Boxing Memory: “When I first met “Jersey” Joe Walcott. I was at an elementary school at Long Island for my fourth amateur fight and he was there. I was excited. He was nice, a beautiful guy. (Another memory was) my grandfather (Archie) got to see me fight. He was 90-years-old. He got to see me fight as an amateur (age 14). My greatest memory of it was right before I was gonna go in the ring, my father and him just arrived. And I was helping my grandfather up the stairs, he was walking up the stairs to go to the arena. Because he passed away that same year. I won a 3rd-round TKO.”

First Job: “Delivering Penny Savers in Brentwood (age 12).”

First Car: “1973 white Cutlass Supreme.”

Pre-Fight Feeling: “Just I was really, really relaxed. Actually I used to fall asleep a lot. I’d just think about all the fun I was gonna have after the fight. And I knew I was always in good shape. It was just ready to go and have that chess match.”

Pre-Fight Meal: “Pancakes and milk in the morning. Pasta and steak in the afternoon.”

Musical Tastes: “A variety. I love jazz, Hip-hop, R&B, I love it all. If it’s got a beat to it, I love it.”

All-Time Favorite Show: “Sanford & Son.”

Favorite Meal: “I love rice and beans, pork chops.”

Favorite Breakfast Cereal: “Oatmeal Raisin Crisp with Raisins.”

Favorite Ice Cream Flavor: “Butter pecan.”

Greatest Sports Moment: “My boxing career? Winning my world titles (IBF Junior welterweight KO 12 vs. Frankie Warren ‘88 and WBC Welter W12 Simon Brown in ‘91). Being announced, ‘…the new champion.’ Just hearing him say, ‘…the new…’ That feeling.”

Most Painful Moment: “After the first Pernell Whitaker fight (12-rd decision loss in ‘93). When I came out of the ring, my son (James) was crying. There was nothing I could do about it.”

Favorite Boxers To Watch (today/all-time): “Today? All the fighters I train [laughs]. No, today, that’s a tough question. Barrera. I just think he’s a great fighter. All-time, Ray Robinson.”

Favorite Fights: “Larry Holmes-Ken Norton. Thrilla in Manila. Hagler-Hearns. Wow. Dokes-Weaver II - just an action fight. A lot of body shots. It was outside in the heat (in Las Vegas). And they were fighting like two warriors. They earned their money that night. And I love Larry Holmes-Ken Norton. That was a great fight. I was young, really into boxing. I was in love with Ken Norton. I thought he was a great athlete. And Larry Holmes burst upon the scene and beat everybody. Close fight, very close fight.”

Toughest Opponent: “The toughest guy I fought was…I would say was Vincent Relaford (KO 11 in Albany in ‘87). Out of Texas. He was tough, man. He was a tough son-of-a-gun, man. After we fought, I think he retired. But he was tough. He could have been world champion. Him and Frankie Warren.”

Hardest Puncher: “Vincent Relaford. He hit me in the stomach and I felt it in my nose [smiles]. I felt it in my nasal passage. I mean it. Like someone stuck a shank in me.”

When Were You At Your Best?: “Oh wow, Simon Brown. (Felt like) I could beat anybody in the world that night. Anybody.”

Favorite Vacation Spot: “I’ve never been on a vacation, to be honest with you. Never. I always - right after the fight - I’d go home. Because I was always in camp. I’d like to go to the Bahamas.”

People Qualities Most Admired: “I like people that have a sense of humor. You’ve got to have a sense of humor to be around me. Because I’m a jokester, I like to have fun. And people who are serious 24 hours a day, I can’t really flow with too much.”
